Oue man is dead and nearly a score of ' others were injured" today by an J explosion on board the Go"rnianstVamer Arcadia, which arrived here .yesterday i from Hamburg. The dead man was a negro stevedore of this city. Sixteen of the injured worn taken to hospitals. They are suffering from burns and lacerations lac-erations and the physicians say they do not expect that any will die. The majority of tho injured are negro stevedores. steve-dores. Somo of thorn will lose their limbs. The explosion occurred in ono of lhc holds of the steamer ;md ils cause is not known. There was nothing of an explosive nature in the cargo and it is believed the accident, was duo to gases that may have accumulated while the holds were closed. Some of the men were able io climb out of tho hold and others wero rescued res-cued by atovedores who wore working in other parts of tho steamer. |
