Show HOPKINS GETTING SCARED. That was a home thrust which Senator Sen-ator Burrows administered to Senator nopkius in the Senato on Thursday. Senator Hopkins superfluously and anxiously introduced a resolution for a constitutional amendment prohibiting polygamy and polygamous cohabitation. Such an amendment, offered by Senator Burrows, was already pending in the Senate. There was no reason whatever wiry Senator Hopkins should offer such an amendment, save as it might serve his own personal aud political purposes by way of mending his standing among the pcoplo of Illinois, which had been so seriously undermined by Hopkins's alliance with the polj'gamous hierarchy of Utah. It was entirely fit, therefore, that Senator Burrows should administer tho pointed thrust to him that ho did. "Do you think that will save you from the, wrath of tho Illinois voters?" iu- quired Senator Burrows. The point of the query lies iu its application. Senator Hopkins voted to retain Apostle Smoot as a Senator of the United States from the State of Utah, and did so for political purposes, treacherously abandoning the record in the--case and piling up falsifications iu his speech in the Senate as reasons and justification for his infamous alliance. Here is a sample of what Senator Hopkins Hop-kins suid in behalf of Smoot iu that miserable speech which he delivered, a speech which reversed the record, dragged in false issues, alleged lies for facts, and altogether stultified Senator Hopkins, and, through him. the people of Illinois. This is the paragraph: ,Reod Smoot Is an apostle of this higher Mormonlsm. lie. stands for the sucred things in the church and agralnst polygamy polyga-my .and ull the kindred vices connected with that loathsome practice. In his position po-sition as a momhor of the church, and as an 'apostle opd prcachor of tho doctrines doc-trines of tho church, ho has done more to slump out this foul blot upon the civilization, of Utah and the other Territories Terri-tories where polygamy has been practiced prac-ticed than any thousand men outside of tho church. vThc allegations in that quotation are absolutely and ridiculously false. Reed Smoot has never raised his voico iu any. position, in airy places or at any time, against polygamy, lie would never nev-er have dared to do so; he would not jdaro to' do so now. lie did not say one word -against polj'gamy iu his recent re-cent apology iu the North American Review for the pledge-breaking, lawless, treasonable, lecherous course of the leaders of the Mormon church since Statehood. Ho himself is of a polygamous polyg-amous family, and it would be impossible impossi-ble for, him' to speak a word against polygamy in- any Mormon assemblage whatuv'er, ""or anywhere else for that matter; and he has never done so. And that sprt of Uiing is what retained re-tained Apostfe. 'Sifiout in, his place in the Senate; false pretenses, misrepresentation. misrepre-sentation. iduTt ii ifesj and the trumping up of false issues for tho purpose of knocking them dowu. A'postlo Smo'ot's case has never been decided on i.ts merits. mer-its. But if he should undertake another term in the Senate as missionary from the Mormon church and itndertukc to fulfill that mission, itis very likely that he' would 'be forced '.to av square show-dUwu'ori' fhc iss'ucsireseu'tcu. and wmmmmnmsmmmmf a decision on tho merits of his case 1)0 not only invited, but forced. But what a pitiful spectacle it is to sco Senator Hopkins undertaking to square himself with tho voters of Illinois Illi-nois by tho pitiful and contemptible dodge of introducing a duplicato resolution reso-lution to one already pending in tho Sonatc on this question! -It is as sorry, as scrubby, a sight as has been seen in many a day to seu Senator Hopkins squirm ,in this matter and offer a gratuitous grat-uitous sclf-stultilicatioti in tho Senate for thc purpose of placating the outraged-.voters of his State. The campaign cam-paign must bo going badly agaiust him for re-election to tho Senate or he would scorn to place himself in such a contemptible, con-temptible, cowardly position as he now 1 occupies. |
