Show TO TUNNEL THE WASATCH. President Hatch of Heber renews a suggestion made some years ago, for a tunnel through the Wasatch range, from the Provo River valley above Heber He-ber to tho Salt Lake valley. He does not Indicate the points of beginning or end of the tunnel, but thinks that It need not be more than eight miles long. It would afford an easy passage for the Moffat road, and above all, It would develop enormous riches In mines, in the depths, as he fully believes. be-lieves. As to the latter, It would depend upon up-on the place where the range would be pierced. If the tunnel were put through to come out In Parley's 01 Emigration canyon, the profpei t of tlndlng riches In mines or minerals would be far less than If It were to come out In Rig or Little Oottonwood. That la, from what Ir known now of the mineral deposits of the range A tunnel which should cut under Park "Ity" great ore deposits, and come out well down Little Cottonwood, could be depended upon, reasonably speaking, to he a great ndne of wealth Rut In order lo tap the ores at depth It would bays to he much mors than elj;ht miles In length. A tunnel which would not he more thai) two thousand feet below the surface sur-face at Park City, would have little ael tntage o er present workings there, Rut at that depth, or deeper, the tunnel tun-nel would no doubt CUt many veins not developed higher up. and some unknown un-known veins that would probably be rich Such a tunnel, say twcnty-fU-e hunlred feet helow the surface at Park City, would, however, require to be as much as twenty miles long. Rut a tunnel less deep, and piercing the range sei as to come out In Emigration Emi-gration canyon, or Parley's, neeri not be over eight miles long. So far as probability goes however, from known conditions, that sort of a tunnel would ' not laji any valuable mineral deposit. Rut it would have the advantage as a railroad tunnel over the route down either of the Cottonwoods, in that it would be shorter, and would probably also shorten the line of the road. Rut we think It would be a magnificent magnifi-cent enterprise, one that woulrl proh-ably proh-ably pay well In mineral values developed, and In addition to the water wa-ter supply of this valley. It would he a magnificent enterprise to have such a tunnel as Preslelent Hatch suggests, put through the Wasatch range. It would be one eif the speetacular operations opera-tions of the world, and would be fertile fer-tile In wonderful possibilities |
