Show SENSATION IN LAND CASE Notary Public Admits Forging the Names of Applicants. SALEM, Or., Jan. 3. A sensation developed de-veloped today In the trial of A T Kel-llher, Kel-llher, accused of obtaining State lands by fraudulently obtained certificates, when the indictment against H. H. Turner, notary public, who made acknowledgments ac-knowledgments of the original applications applica-tions for purchase, was dismissed. Turner was placed on the witness stand and confessed that the signatures to the applications were forgeries, the names having been written by himself. Had Witnesses Ready. Kelllher had subpoenaed expert handwriting hand-writing witnesses to pro e the signatures signa-tures were w ritten by different person?, but it Is now thought these witnesses will not be called upon to testify. The defense objected to Turner be'.ng allowed to give evidence because he was under Indictment, and the Indictment was dismissed so that hi? evidence could become of record. To all Intents Turner Turn-er turned State's evidence. |
