Show THE MOVING HATE The California Christian Advocate pays the klnrily Compliment to Th Trllinne of saying that this p:tper Is decidedly "vital" and that It has ;ip-parently ;ip-parently proved to the satisfaction of the people of Utah that "President Joseph Jo-seph F. Smith Is disloyal to Hie Republic" Re-public" Deep down in the hearts of the hierarchy hie-rarchy is a real or pretended belief ir pretense It Is so carefully nurtured as to seem like reality that the Mormon chun h Is the literal kingdom of clod destined to overthrow our present form of national government, nnd afterward to lake literal command of all things mundane, with the priesthood in monarchal mo-narchal charge in preparation for the coming of Christ. That proposition has been ,no well established, es-tablished, not only by The Tribune, but most momentously by Frederick M Smith, grandson of the Mormon prophet, proph-et, and himself one of the first presidency presi-dency of the Reorganized church, that the Deseret News, which Is the Mormon church organ in Utah, has ceased to deny. Possibly one of the greatest broadsides ever delivered nt hierarchical hierarchi-cal assumption within the Mormon church or elsewhere In modern times was the letter written to The Tribune by Frederick M . Smith show ins: by the utterances of every president of the Mormon church from Hrlcham Younc to Joseph F. Smith, that unquestioning obedience to the priesthood superior obedience to that paid to any other authority au-thority on earth was and Is demanded by the hierarchy of their followers. Probably the most startling utterance of the long and appalling series was that of Joseph F. Smith himself, who blasphemously said at Provo, Utah, in the stake conference held In the Tabernacle Taber-nacle there on the nineteenth day of April, 1S96: Tho fact of the matter Is. when a man says you can direct me spiritually, hut rot temorally, he lies in the presence of God that Is If he has got Intelligence enoujfh to know what he Is talking about. In order to comprehend how such an enormity can be uttered and maintained with apparent sincerity by the chief prophet of the Mormon i hgTi h and to the seeming (although perhaps not real) acceptance of the whole body of the church, the character of Smith himself should be understood. He has no law save his own will, He was nurtured in the belief that his father was a prophet appointed by the voice of God to deliver de-liver a message to the last dispensation of times. His early youth was embittered embit-tered by the remembrance that his fath- r, un onvlcted and uncharged of crime, was assassinated In Carthage jail near Nnuvoo while und r protection of the law His hat..' of the State and the Nation Na-tion under which the martyrdom had been effected was the most Intense feeling feel-ing of his soul through the time of migration mi-gration to Utah and through the years of hardship which prevailed here. He was early brought Into the quorum of the twelve to fulfill a promise and to carry out a purpose of Brigham Young to have one of the original Smiths v.lth the church as a leader. Joseph F Smith also entered, at an early age, Into polygamy polyg-amy and has lived therein continuously utterly disdainful of law and public sentimentality Toward the Nation thl man has no feeling whatever of citizenship citizen-ship in th'- ordinary n . -.-pi ;i n. . of th.it term. To his mind It Is a mere rival power against which he owes an enmity en-mity and of which he must soon take possession in fulfillment of family prophecy made. Taking Into account the nature and nurture of Joseph F Smith it Is not difficult to realize his mental attitude on th- subject of his relation to the country and to the laws. And lill he IB without oyruse for his violations of statute and covenant: for. nfter having made one long bitter war lasting until ISOfi to controvert thp purpose pur-pose of the United Stales concerning the Mormon church, he laid down his arms to beg for amnesty; he accepted It upon the conditions Imposed; he utilized util-ized the privilege of full citizenship accorded ac-corded under Statehood; and ho broke every pledge :nd every law contradictory contradict-ory of his own selfish purpose with a lack of conscience almost Impossible to conceive except It be explicable by this statement- That long hatred of th Nation and a fanatical belief In bis own right by appointment from God to defy rll laws and all constitutions, has mad? his parole of honor the most worthless Utterance that can fall from human lips. He Is an ' enemy" of this Republic and a treasonable betrayer of Its trust. |
