H Paint Shqp SAved. For a time the firemen directed their ef-forts ef-forts toward saving the paint shop, and by hurd work this was accomplished. Several times It was on fire and had the flames once reached the large amount of combustible material contained therein, the w hole plant would no doubt hay e burned Iok' ther with a large amount of valuable property In the Immediate vbin- Ity. Knowing that unless this building I could be saved the whole row of structure struc-ture would be consumed, special effort was directed toward that portion of the shops lying to the south and close to the paint shop. ' Nine Cars Burned. Nine cars In ul I were either burned or j badly damaged. Of this number two ca- booses and a combination passenger and baggag- car were In fbc shops while six freight cars wi s idlhg on a sdo- track being repajr-d. As a number of tne latt'-r were propped up on Jack and were not In running order. It was impossible to move them out of the way of the flames. as was done with other ,urs dangerously close to the burning building. Loss of Machinery Heavy. The greatest loss was from the damage to machinery and tools. Forty-two men jH were employed In the buildings that burned and all of the machlit-cry machlit-cry which they operated aa well as a large number of chests of tools, were burned. Three chests of the latter wer saved, hut the falling timbers and tho heat of the flames compelled others who valued their property highly to stand back and sco it destroy New Building Saved I The new car shores now In probes' of construction W r- saved Those destroyed will be rebuilt at once, but at least sixty days will elapse before th-y can be com-pleted com-pleted and new machinery Installed and eif course the employees will be thrown , H out of work lor that length of time Large Crowd Attracted. Fully On-v people visited the scono of the tire and officers were kept busy prevent-Ing prevent-Ing the spectators from enturlng tco near the danger line. When it became evident that the esnioke tack would soon-er soon-er or luter topple over, the officers passM the word to the crowd to look out tor the electric wires overhead lhat would be carried with It, and later as an extra pre-caution pre-caution they -wcr disconnected. Difficult to Estimate Damages The buildings were not expensive struc-tures. struc-tures. but the machinery destroyed or damaged was worth g&OOO. Had th flames extend, d to th balance of the buildings the loss would have been ten times what It wus. ae the loss of valua-ble valua-ble patterns and the large amount of bth-cr bth-cr property not easily replaced would quickly run into the hundreds of thou-sands thou-sands of dollars. Buildings Total Loss. The engine-house and tho car shop or repair shop as It is often called, are a total loss. Roth were built with a frnnie-work frnnie-work of timbers, over which had been used corrngat' d iron. Some idea of the Intense heat of the (lames can be formed win n It kS stated that the sheets of metal became red hot and some of tne. machln- x cry fairly melted In the roaring furnace. I i |
