Show BUT ONE CHOICE POSSIBLE. If any voter will candidly consider the candidates nominated for their suffrage at the coming election, he or she will easily see that there is but one choice, consistent with the duty that every one owes to the city. All except the reactionary reac-tionary element arc In favor of Salt Lake; all alert, . Independent people want to see the city grow and become great. There Is but one thing, therefore, there-fore, to do, for such enterprising, aspiring as-piring voters: that Is, to vole the American Amer-ican ticket. It has been abundantly shown, even by the enemies of progress and of Americanism, that it Is the American element In our population that has been doing the buylng.of real estate, and Improving Im-proving It, the past five years. Even In an effort to "boost" the opposition, this great fact stood out so clear. It loomed up so! grandly, that Its significance signifi-cance could not be mistaken. And now, the question Is, shall these progressive Americans, who have done so much for the city, and are still doing their good work In and for it, be supported in their efforts for growth and improve ment? Shall they be told that their work Is approved, and that the Inhabitants Inhab-itants of this city like that work, and would be glad to see more of It, or shall they be told at the polls that they havo done wrong; that It Is not well for them to spend their money in buying real estate here and building fine business busi-ness blocks, splendid residences, and model tenements'' Shall they be told that It Is better to endeavor to kill the real estate market by howling against selling property to "the enemies," and pointing to "the disastrous consequences" of such sales In the high prices of realty on Main street? 4 Which of the three candidates for Mayor best represents the one side and the other? Which is in the list of those who have largely bought and built upon busliics8 property within the past five years 7 The Tribune on Sunday morning morn-ing last gave the list, embracing Gentiles Gen-tiles exclusively, almost ' unanimously members of the American party. Which candidate Is conspicuously In the business busi-ness class? ' Is any other than one answer possible to these questions? Has any other than Mr. Thompson a right, as between the three,. to be enrolled In this class? Has either of the others done anything for the city, by "way of purchase or improvement? im-provement? What, is the sense, then, of thlB childish effort to claim for either of the others any service to the business busi-ness interests of the city? What folly It Is, In view of the record", to attempt to boost the church-controlled "Deinp-cratfc" "Deinp-cratfc" or "Republican" nominees Into helpers of the city, for which they have done nothing, but Id call upon the city to help them' by giving them ofHce! What rank, malicious no"hsensc it Is to call these do-nothings tho .true friends of tho city, and decry the real helper and his friends as "knockers!" Mayor Thompson, as an official, while ho was in office, was as zealous in his public service as no has been In his pi'l- vale capacity as a citizen ot i Salt Lake City. In building It up. He was honest, faithful. He protected pro-tected the rights and the Interests or the city. Under his administration, there was no Increase of the tax rate, though the assessed valuation was materially ma-terially lower than now, his beneficent administration giving the start to that increased value. Ho protected the Interests of the taxpayers, tax-payers, by keeping down expenses, and holding the city's expenditures within Its income. He also gained for the worklngmen In the employ of the city a fair addition to their wages, thus equalizing the rewards of toll as between be-tween tho official and the non-otllclal class. And this was done not by Imposing Im-posing heavier burdens upon tho tax-payprs, tax-payprs, but by cutting down expenses where the cost had been swelled beyond proper limits. As a friend to labor and of property alike, Mayor Thompson was a model executive. And the people will take pulns to see that he "gets there" again. |
