Show A MAGNIFICENT CAMPAIGN. The American campaign this year has been pushed In magnificent style, 'and It Is In such satisfying condition as to cause the utmost enthusiasm in the breasts of all who desire and hope that Salt Lake will be henceforth a free city. The cry of "knockers," which was raised against the Americans, was so ridiculously false and Inappropriate that It was not difficult to hurl It back upon the heads of those who raised It. When tho showdown was made of those who arc buying and Improving Salt Lake property. It was seen that It was these same "knockers" that were doing it all. When the call was made for n. showing of the good work In this direction that the opposition had done or were doing, there was no response. There could be none, for they were not doing anything. When the call was made to show what the reactionaries' were doing for this town, what their great leader thought ought to be done, it was found that he considered all who were not of his own sect, were "enemies," nnd he denounced the Idea of selling land to newcomers, proclaiming boastfully that he had never sold any of his land to "enemies of the kingdom." In the same vein, his son, Apostle Hyrum Smith, pleaded with the Saints not to lot their "enemies" have their property for money, but urged them to hold on to It, citing them to the great value of land on Main street, pretending that If the Saints had not sold their land, that great value would now belong to them a stupid fallacy, for Main street property prop-erty would be worth no more than property on Second North, If It were all in the hands of the Saints. Yet the counsel of those men. considered as authoritative and binding upon them by their followers, exposes the animus of the reactionary gang which is opposing the American party a gang that makes no Improvements itself, and is Insanely hostile to and Jealous of those who do Improve the city. As opposed to this double-tailed death-ln-llfe which controls and dictates dic-tates to both the "Democratic" and the "Republican" candidates, controll ing them absolutely, stands the American Ameri-can party, strong, active, enterprising, public-spirited. Of the Improvements made In the city the past five years, they have contributed fully ninety per cent. They are the clty-buljders, the men and women who make business active and who keep alive the realty market and the house-construction. They are ihe ones whose liberal expenditures and manifold needs foster the- expansion of trade, the multiplication of business houses, the employment of and facilities for professional men of ajl classes. They are the ones who have made Salt Lake a great and attractive city, taking It when It was a mere provincial settlement settle-ment and making It a metropolis. These arc the notorious fact of the situation. They are what makes the present campaign a business enterprise rather than a political canvass.' It has become a fight for Salt Lake by the American party, for progress, growth, the Incoming of new poople, the bringing bring-ing in of outside capital, and inviting here of industrial and financial elements ele-ments of strength. When the Liberals won their victory here sixteen years ago, It was the signal sig-nal for a mighty leap forward for the city. But presently the great Impulse was lost, by the gradual merging of the people into false alignments, and the submerging of the spirit of enterprise and vitality. At present Salt Lake in feeling and in action, Is practically on the same plane as It was prior to that Liberal regeneration. The city needs another shaking up, another Infusion Into Its veins of the spirit of virility, energy, and enterprise which the triumph tri-umph of the American Ideas and spirit will Impart. With the American victory, vic-tory, the city will again be born nnew, and every one will feel the beneficent influence of tho blessed change. A vote for the American ticket Is a vote for the new and progressive Salt Lake; a vote against It Is a vote to hold things In the old rut, and to warn progress' pro-gress' away. |
