Y.t March 27 Tho Mohawk river, which ha9 been gorged with Ice about six miles west of the city, tonight ovcrllowcd Into the Erie canal, ca-nal, which runs parallel to It here, tearing tear-ing the embankment away for more than 200 feet. The canal was empty, but in less than an hour there was a rush of water which Hooded tho streets In this city adjacent to the- canal, carried away boats from their moorings and rendered many houses uninhabitable. Some of the New York Central tracks aro Inundated, and traffic has been Interrupted. A twenty-foot gorge bus formed at IIoffman'R ferry, backing up the water which has spread over the Hats and Mowed nround tho gorge, which threatens to break at any time. The river at this point Is rising at tho rate of six feet an hour. |
