By tho time tho machines had traveled the flvo miles every spectator specta-tor In tho big coliseum was on his feet trembling with oxcltomont and when the three "rcd-devlls" ceased their oxpross-traln oxpross-traln gait and aradually slowed down, tho vast concourse heaved a large sigh of relief re-lief that tho ncrvo-racklng porformanco was ended. An Exciting- Event. Tho motor race wns ono of tho most intonoely exciting events that has been, pulled off at tho saucer this season. Ed Ilcugren, T. M. Samuelson. and John Chapman were the rldora who guided the sputtering speedstera around tho course. Ilcagrcn's machine was by far the best of the bunch, andV beroro the live miles had been covered, tho motor had passed tho others several times. Tho amateur rider hod plenty of nerve and let his machine ma-chine out almost .to tho limit, with the result that most of tho spectators thought ho would fly tho track. However, Hea-gren Hea-gren had excellent control and except on ono occasion when he brushed elbows with Samuelson, there was little danger of a spill. Tho time for the live miles was 6:23 2-5. In qualifying for tho rnco Hcagrcn ripped off a mllo In 1:14, breaking the track record for tho distance. Thvee-Mile Lap Professional. Excepting the motor race, the featuro of the evening was tho three mllo lap professional pro-fessional In which CoIWt and Samuelson Samuel-son llnlshed In a dead heat. A blanket would have covered both riders on the entire en-tire last lap and when they flashed ucross tho tapo scarcely an Inch sepnratod their front wheels. It wns a beautiful finish and tho crowd voiced Its approval with lusty cheers. Chapman was third and Achorn fourth. Time 6:23 2-5. Tho half-mile open professional race went to Samuelson by a nurrow margin. Hardy Downing was n close second, Collett Col-lett third and Williams fourth. Time 5S 1-5 seconds. Hengren was first In the two-mllo lap amateur, with Agras next. Redman came third and Castro fourth. Time 4:15 4-5. The onc-mllo open amateur went to Agraz. Wilcox made a desperate bid for first money, but fell a trifle short. Hea-gren Hea-gren was third. Time 2:01 3-5. Burris suffered a fall In tho "pro" lap race, when ho looked like an easy winner. With a handicap of 100 yards, Burris had caught the scratch men and looked safe for llrst money, when ho tumbled. Frank Schncll, an amateur, also had hard luck and spilled, but escaped without Injury. |
