They telephoned tele-phoned their wives that they would 'be gone for a few days and not to wait supper for them. That was. all that could.be learned at their homes, but it is. understood that they -are making a still hunt for the witnesses subpoenaed' in the Smoot case. The documents, including more than a score of subpoenas, arrived .from Washington yesterday afternoon, and the Marshal Immediately began to s-vjrvc them on the desired witnesses. He found Apostle John Henry Smith In bed,, where he Is confined by an attack of rheumatism, and read the call to Washington. President Joseph P. Some ton of tho witnesses, believed to be Joseph F. Smith, Hyrum M. Smith, Andrew Jensen, Francis M. Lyman, John Henry Smith, John James, Georgo Teasdale, John W. Taylor, M. F. Cowley Cow-ley and Mariner D. Merrill are summoned sum-moned duces tecum, that Is, with tho books and documents bearing on tho case. Among those who are notified to appear simply as witnesses It is understood under-stood that tho following are to be found: C. M. Owon, Thomas H. Merrill, Mer-rill, Alma Merrill, Charles E. Merrill, Lorln Harmer, Sam S. Newton, J. M. Tannor, Moses Thatcher, E. B. Crltch-low, Crltch-low, Mrs. Charles Matthews, Mabel Barber Kennedy and B. H. Roberts. The. witnesses will have but little time for the Journey to tho National capital, as the hearing of tho Smoot case Is to begin next Tuesday beforo the Senate Committee on Privileges and Eleotlona. They will receive per diem and mileage In both directions. The list Is supposed to Include all tho apostles who are living In polygamy. |
