Show HANNA AND CUBA Senator in Favor of Administrations Policy Regarding Isle TRIBUNE SPECIAL Cleveland 0 Sept 6I am In favor of the Administrations policy In regard to Cuba because we are under a moral obligation growing out of conditions imposed by tho Platt amendment Tho proposed reciprocity re-ciprocity will help us find will not seriously injure any Industry M A HANNA The otllludo of Senator Hanna upon the above subject Is MO well known as to scarcely call for a repetition at this time From the very Ilrat he was In favor of as broad 1C not broader reciprocal recip-rocal relations with Cuba than are now proposed by the President To the writer writ-er he staled within two weeks of this time that the more he studied the position po-sition of Cuba and the Cuban Government Govern-ment and her people and their attitude toward the United States and the obll gallono of this country toward the Cuban Cu-ban Republic and her people the more convinced ho was that we should do something which would very materially material-ly I assist Cuba to place herself upon a proper commercial basis and to Immediately Im-mediately assist her people In development develop-ment and recuperation Why said he I might nay with truth that the last appeal I heard President McKinley make In behalf of any policy was that favoring reciprocity reciproc-ity with Cuba He seemed to be unable un-able to find words to cxpreso the moral obligations he believed the United States owed the Cuban people at this lime WILL NOT INJURE INDUSTRIES Senator Hanna said he did not believe the 20 pet cent reciprocal differential duty to Cuba would Injure any of our industries or Interests He especially dwelt upon the great advantages that would eventually accrue to tho United States In helping Cuba at thin time and stated lhai in her distress and helplessness If the United States did nothing to assist Cuba ahe would naturally nat-urally turn to some other country and that being a free and Independent Republic Re-public able and capable of making any commercial alliance with any other country she might form commercial alliances which would prove eventually very embarrasslng to this country AS TO ANNEXATION OF ISLE He Intimated very strongly = that In his opinion the annexation oC Cuba to Ihc United States would coma about and there is I now a very strong and growing sentiment in favor oC immediate imme-diate annexation He did not express himself aa favorable to annexation especially es-pecially at this time but did express the belief that Cuba would before many years ask for annexation especially if we offered that country at this time such assistance as was necessary to enable her people to reestablish their Industries Ho spoke of the Influence upon the efforts being made by President Roosevelt Roose-velt for Cuba by the adoption of favorable fa-vorable recommendations by the various va-rious Republican organizations in their Stale platforms He said that he believed be-lieved nqarly all of the Republicans in their State conventions throughout the country would heartily Indorse President Pres-ident Roosevelts position In the matter mat-ter which Is I that of President McKln icy |
