Show a lrltODGERS If DANGER I I i I Ir Roomers in the Utah House i I Have Close Call I I t I I 1 I t d FIRE FROM EXPLODING LAMP I I f J Ii I I I + Frame Building on West Sid Destroyed ij I I t iI i Discovered by Proprietor Who Titan i i aged to Awaken Boomers in Timo I to Got Them Out of House h I f I I I + l L i Fire which had Its origin from an i I exploding lamp practically destroyed I J II I i I a twostory frame building at 363 r + South Fifth West street a few minutes I I l after 5 oclock yesterday morning The I i building n flimsy structure was built I In 1SOO and was used as a lodging house Twentyfive male lodgers in i the building barely escaped with their 4 lives i and the firemen considered this t to be bordering on the miraculous ns I I they call the building a fire trap of the worst kind t i 1 HAD TO HURRY I I The fire was discovered by William I Button the proprietor who had arisen I + at 5 oclock to start the fire In the 1 kitchen range He descended to the kitchen by tho back stairs and did i I I 1 not therefore discover the blaze at J I once as it was In the office In the front part of the building When the smell I of flame and smoke caused him to investigate d I I I in-vestigate the room was In flames which were rising through the ceiling J I Sutton hurried around and awakened the roomers who got out in the nick of time for when the fire department I arrived tho flames had spread over the II second story and burst through the s f1 I roof The firemen found their work 4 I J difficult and dangerous for the partitions I parti-tions in most of the rooms were of l I wood and dry as tinder Hose No 2 I answered the first call and it was then I i found necessary to send in a second 1 alarm to which hose and chemical 1 I I1 I responded I 1 FIREMEN DONT LIKE IT 1 f In the opinion of the firemen the l I building should have been condemned I long ago There arc other buildings of a similar character in the same lock and It Is probable an Inspection of them will be ordered i The building destroyed yesterday I I was known as the Utah house Its I I proprietor William Sutton a few weeks ago slightly wounded George Hancock a lodger In the house by 1 J shooting him At the preliminary hear I I if IUJ before Judge DIehl ho was d i charged I |
