high The hands will he fifty feet long ami they will be moved pneumatically the machinery ma-chinery for the clock being furnished I by an exhibiting manufacturer of tower I clocks The clock will occupy a slope of about 30 degrees being visible from 1 a large part of the site to the north and west Compressed air for the operation of the clock machinery will be supplied by a motor and pump In a powerhouse built at the southern or upper end of the dial The clock will be sixteen times as large as the giant clock In the Parliament house in London said to be the largest In the world MODEL RICE FARM The State of Louisiana in conjunction conjunc-tion with the American RiceGrowers association will have as an exhibit at the St Louis Worlds fair a model rice farm All the details have been arranged ar-ranged by MnJ J G Lee Louisiana State Commissioner of Agriculture The exhibit proposed Is a model rice farm with mill wells canal drainage and piping plants and all other necessary neces-sary equipments for rice culture besides be-sides statistics maps and photographs suitable for the thorough explanation of the Industry The matter of arranging the exhibit has been turned over devoted to aquatic birds the rest to songsters and birds of plumage Each section will have trees and a running stream Tunnels Tun-nels for visitors will run through the aviary Dr Frank Baker superintendent of the National Zoological park at Washington Wash-ington D C visited the Administration Administra-tion building yesterday for the purpose of arranging details for the exhibit which will be one of the most attractive attrac-tive novelties at the exposition The Varied Industries building is a magnificent structure on the outer perl meter of the main picture of the fair It comes Into the view of the beholder Immediately after he has passed through the main entrance gate The building presents a facade of 1200 feet on the north and south and G25 feet on the cast and west giving 656250 feet of exhibition space all on the ground floor It Is a columnated design embodying em-bodying a free treatment of the Ionic order There Is an Increase In the size of the columns used at the southern main entrance but In such style and taste as not to Interfere with the general gen-eral I design In the center of the north facade Is a low dome flanked by towers about 200 feet high These towering features afford af-ford ample space for electrical dlspl < land l-and illumination Numerous entrances are on the facades exclusive of the main entrance in the center A specially featured entrance 13 made at the center of the south front this entrance being thrown back and ama a-ma nlf1ccnt circular colonnade thrown out in front of It The colonnade construction con-struction on the main fronts afford protection for pedestrians from both sun and rain In the center or the structure are two large courts affording afford-ing light and ventilation to the building build-ing Graceful iron sheds or canopies will be erected in the courts Two ornate kiosks used as toilet rooms arc placed In the courts The building build-Ing Is so designed that It has a magnificent mag-nificent corridor or pasagcway through the center from north to south The size and grace of this building adds materially to the beauty and attractiveness at-tractiveness of the group of buildings forming the main picture of the fair Van Brunt Howe of Kansas City are the architects It was the first exposition building for whose erection a contract was let It was built by the Rountree Construction company at a cost of about 650000 It was practically prac-tically completed on Dedication day April 20 1003 and was occupied by the members of the National Guard who picketed the grounds and participated In by Walker KImball of Boston and Omaha who were chief architects of the Omaha exposition ex-position It is located on the main central avenuo and forms one of the leading elements of the main exposi tion picture It haa a frontage of 650 feet toward the north and 625 feet toward the east facing the main lagoon la-goon The design Is a bold columnated treatment of the Corinthian order The columns are carried well down toward the ground to give height to the fa cades Tho facades will he well accentuated ac-centuated by elevated pediments and tower effects over the four main entrances en-trances and at the corners Over the accentuated places as well as over the twin columns which form a pleasing variation of the treatment of the fa codes opportunity for ample sculptural decoration la supplied
