Show PROTEST OF KEARNS Will Not TTrgo Protection of WaterSheds Water-Sheds to Source Believing It to Injure Stock Interests Gov Wdisisin receipt of the following selfexplanatory communication from Senator Kcarns regarding tho withdrawal withdraw-al from entry of certain land In the Wa satch mountalnn about which so much has been said Your Setter concerning tho withdrawal of nearly COOO square miles of land rom entry Jn the Wnsatch mountains cams this morning Already I have entered a protest against this action I seems tho Secretary of the Interior made this sweeping withdrawal In order that ho could better prosecuto Inquiries through Geological survey concerning the actual act-ual needs of he situation From time to time as you are aware I have received petitions urging the protection by withdrawal with-drawal from entry of tracts of land cm braced In tho water sheds of tho various localities l While I am heartily In favor of giving to tho municipalities of tho Stat all the protection possible for their drinking water I am not going to the extreme ex-treme In my recommendations and urgo the protection of a water shed lo Its very source This would be both unnecessary and a hardship upon those great industries Indus-tries which have dono ao much toward the development of our State Medical men tell me running water purifies itself In r few miles If this be so I can see no reason why tho sheep men and tho people who arc clamoring for pure water cannot get together and decide upon some dcllnlte plan of action When this order was llrst promulgated I went at once to the Secretary of the Interior and made a protest against its enforcement Since then I have seen the President I do not believe tho order will ever receive tho sanction of the President Meanwhile the matter Is being Investigated by the Geological Geo-logical survey Depend upon It I shall not permit the promulgation of this order or-der if I can promulrlon |
