Show THE WATERSHED RESERVE ORDER Tho recent order of the Secretary of the Interior < withdrawing lands from entry In the adjacent mountains with a ylew to securing the purity of tho water supply in Salt Lake and other cities appears to have been well meant This city has for years been trying to get the protection of Ita water supply assured and has spent large sums to that end It will not consent to have Its action nullified under a pretense of Injury to the stock interests What is needful to the purity of the water supply must be enforced the people do not want to trust to tho medical theory that water Impregnated with filth will purify itself by running down a canyon especially If that canyon can-yon is rather moro likely to add to the filth than to decrease it Logan has already protested against Interference with Secretary Hitchcocks order of reservation and If necessary to prcsevo the purity of this citys water supply Salt Lake must also protest This is said In no spirit of hostility to the stock interests and with no desire to have any grcatcer reservation than the needs of the case call for but tho people of the cities will insist upon their right to have uncontaminated water IC tho Secretarys order was too sweeping let I tbe modified but it will not do to go too far the other way in that modification modifica-tion Let all interests be fairly treated let the cattlemen have their ranges but let the city also have its reservations Tho health of the people is of greater i Importance than the convenience of feeding cattle and slieep important as that is the right thing should be done by all and alarmed outcries should not bo glen too much consideration just enough no more J c |
