Show REGARDING MINIATURES I Statement of President I L A u mar of Art Institute Editor TrlbuneNotlng a letter from Mrs T Mo In this mornings Tribune concerning Mr Mcnzell and concrlns renzel evidently re erring to the oftrepeated statement that thu Utah Art Institute had Instlute treated him and his works unfairly at the November exhibition It seems time for me to state what actually occurred i do this In Justice to Miss Mary Tou del who 15 ono of the governing board of the Institute and herself a pointer of miniatures For tho latter accomplishment she seems to have been singled out by many an ono who was Interested In making cruel charges against Mr malting crcl Menell 11 As a matter of tact there lenzel been no 0 charges cruel or otherwise mado against him by lho Institute or any of Its mem bers Ilia name has I lls never been men tioned at any of tho meetings of the meetngs board I know that ho and his workK were treated with exceptional considera tion No doubt his miniatures were discussed dis-cussed there All of our work wus That Is what an exhibition Is for I is I a question whether any of us escaped ad escape verse criticism along with a lot of praise and the former prIse probably did us more good than the latter When dIe ar LIst dislikes criticism he should not ex hibit But to say that tho Institute Insllute would attack an artist Is absurd though 1 have heard It said Wo thouh and give fair consideration to all If tho al pictures submitted fall below a certain standard they arc courteously declined declned of course Mr MonzcUs were admitted which was an Indorsement In Itself There waa nothing extraordinary about his work either on way or tho other and nothing much to talk about But who lover was sId Miss Tcabdcl took no part In It When Mr Mcnzcll first presented his in I n fato res for exhibition I asked him whether they wero freehand drawings I or photographs worked over cohand entirely he said All right I replied We will take your word for It They are admitted to tho Jury I was our busy day1 hundreds of other pictures were coming In but ho stayed and talked and kept us from our work I repealing that they wero freehand and finally I promised to have the matter Investigated In-vestigated If ho would only go Two of our Jury examined tho minia tures further and I think that later Menzell got them to give him n written statement thit It was done freehand though no one had been disputing It But It didnt drop there It sprung up at odd times during the exhibition I got Into the papors months afterward It Is I btlll getting in and threatens to run Its course long after the ShakespeareBacon controversy has been betn forgotten II L A CULMER March 21 190 |
