Show J SALOONS AND GAMBIING Effort to Show That Hilton Is Responsible Re-sponsible for Closing It was stated yesterday on behalf of Chief Hilton that the saloonmon and gamblers hope Hilton will decide to leave police life soon Jf any saloon mer or gamblers have expressed themselves to this effect their statements state-ments have not been made public and the assertion made yesterday created much adverse comment among Mayor Thompsons friends and among those conversant with the facts of the mat tar It Is well known that It was Mayor Thompson who closed the gambling houses of the city by a special or der to the Police department on the subject It is also a matter of his tory that Chief Hilton absolutely re fused to close the saloons on Sun days when called upon to do so by the representatives of the Sunday School union it is history that Chief Hilton persisted In thin refusal until a resolution had passed the City Council Coun-cil and Mayor Thompson had issued a peremptory order that the law and ordinance be enforced Chief Hilton did not send In his resignation re-signation yesterday and there was no change In the situation It is thought that If the Chief resigns at all It will not be until after the cases of Sheets Janney and Brown have been permanently perma-nently disposed of by the City Council I Coun-cil He IK l sold to have prepared very serious charges against tho men to br used if necessary I The feeling regarding the struggle was just as intense In the city yester I day as at any lime since the opening There was talk In some quarters of amass a-mass meeting to give the people In general an opportunity to express their sentiments This talk could not be traced to any authentic source no ac tion was taken |
