Show I I SENATOR HANNA SAYS CHAIRMANSHIP I IS A DEAD ISSUE Very Guarded on Political Questions WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE Panama Canal Treaty the Only Matter Discussed c RearAdmiral Glass Will Have Supreme Su-preme Command Over the Naval Forces at the Isthmus Washington Nov 30 An Important Im-portant conference concerning the Panama Pan-ama situation was held at the White House today just prior to the formal meeting oC the Cabinet The participants partici-pants in the conference were President Roosevelt Senator Hanna and members mem-bers of the Cabinet The decision reached If any was not disclosed It is understood however that the discussion discus-sion was purely Informal and not Intended In-tended In any manner to be decisive Shortly before the meeting of the 1 Cabinet Senator Hanna arrived at the Executive offices accompanied by W J Curtis a member of the law llrm of Sullivan Sul-livan S Cromwell of New York attorneys attor-neys In this country for tho new Panama Pana-ma Canal company They were admitted admit-ted to the Presidents olllce at once Mr Curtis remained only a few minutes min-utes lie said he merely paid his respects re-spects to the President Senator Hanna remained with the President for more than half an hour Long after the members mem-bers of the Cabinet had assembled he and the President continued to talk several of the Cabinet officers joining in the conversation conversationCHAIRMANSHIP CHAIRMANSHIP NOT UP As Senator Hanna left he said that he and the President had not discussed the chairmanship the national committee I com-mittee In fact said lie that matter mat-ter was not mentioned today It is a dead issue anyhow We talked of a variety oC topics continued the Senator among them the Panama situation That is not a political po-litical question not even a technical one The people of this country want mi Isthmian canal built and they want It built by the Panama route They have accepted the Panama routo and they propose to stand by the President in the latter constructing the canal by that route Senator Hanna was asked whether in his opinion It would be necessary to enact new legislation to provide for negotiations ne-gotiations between the United States and the Republc of Panama for the construction of that canal Ho replied thJl that was a question for a lawyer to answer He felt that a new treaty would be necessary of course but did not think serious difficulty would be encountered en-countered In negotiating a canal treaty with Panama WARSHIPS AT PANAMA The Navy department Is advised that RoarAdmiral Glass commanding the l Pacific elation arrived at Panama this morning with the cruiser Morblehead and the gunboat Concord having made a quick run from Acapulco Their consort con-sort the monitor Wyoming was notable not-able to keep up with the two other vessels ves-sels and probably will not reach Panama Pana-ma before Thursday By virtues of his rank Admiral Glass will have supreme command over lire naval forces in the vicinity of Panama With the exception of a brief cablegram cable-gram from Admiral Glass announcing his arrival at Panama no cablegrams were received over night by the State and Navy departments PO it Is presumed pre-sumed the status quo Is being maintained main-tained there There is no expectation here of a hostile clash on the Isthmus In the Immediate future for It is believed I ieved that the Colombian Government when fully advised of what ban happened hap-pened will accept the Inevitable and not attempt to send troops to attack Panama in the face of the United States naval vessels guarding the approaches |
