Show GILES PLEADS GUILTY I I Fillmore Man Confesses in I Federal Court I CALLS HIMSELF AN OLD FOOL I In Admitting the Chargo that Ho Forged the Name of ReceIver Smith to a land Office Receipt He Does not Seek to Shield Himself at All Given Time to Arrange His Affairs Af-fairs Mrs George Wiseman Sues for Divorce Failure to Support and Drunkenness Alleged t l J S Giles of Fillmore who was Indicted In-dicted for forgery appeared for arraignment ar-raignment In the United Slates court yesterday morning and pleaded guilty technically guilty as he put It to I the charge At the time the offense was committed about a year and a half I ago Giles was United States Commissioner Commis-sioner at Fillmore When the offense was discovered he aT once left home I and did not return until a few days before j I be-fore his arrest last week His offense I consisted In forging the name of George A Smith receiver of the Salt LakeLand Lake-Land office to a receipt for 4225 entry foes for George Bishop of Millard county i When Giles was arraigned yesterday he was asked If he were ready to plead j He hesitated for a time and Judge Marshall asked Have you an altor I ney Mr Giles Giles replied that he had not and the Judge then asked Do you desire an attorney or are you able to employ I one Mr Giles Giles replied that he did not want I i to employ one and said he was ready to plead lie then said 101 shall I render a plea of gullly lechnically I guilty You understand the effect of such a plea that It will subject you to punlyhmenl Judge Marshall said I U I understand that said Giles I think I deserve It An old fool as old as I am ho from importunities of a man allowed himself to do such a thIng I think he deserves punishment I told Mr Bishop at lie time that that was not a proper rccelijt I Just make this statement so that your Honor may understand lie hadnt t j j I made out his filings He had filed only ono for his desert entry but ho Im portunid me for the receipt and I via fool enough to give it to him II And it was signed i by the receiver Inquired Judge Marshall Signed just I is that Indicating the indictment slates exactly I I Giles then asked l that time be allowed al-lowed him to arrange his affairs before I sentence was pronounced Ho said ho had an invalid wife and several small children and requested that the pars ing of the sentence bo deferred for I thirty days as he was not III very good circumstances Judgo Marshall i said I he felt disposed lo defer the pronounc ing of the l sentence for two weeks if Giles thought 1 he could be ready by that time Giles thanked the Judge and said he thought that time would bo sufficient and February 12th at 10 oclock was accordingly set as the time for passing the sentence Giles was allowed to depart toarrange his affairs ns he had previously given a continuing bond for his appearance Giles Is a man of 67 years and has been one of the most prominent and bestrespected citizens of Millard count since ISfll lie has been honored with almost every office In the gift of the citizens of the county and stood high In the esteem of even one there |
