Show If f I SMALLPOX FROM BUTTE I PASSENGER ARRIVES WITH PUSTULES ON HIS PAC Doctors Hold a Consultation in n Archway Over the Case and Attract At-tract a Crowd which Disperses The archway on the west side or State street a short distance south pf Second South presented a lively scene yesterday morning for a short time The cause was the discovery on the streets of George Phelps who was afllleted with what appeared to be a i case of smallpox Dr Witenor saw the young man passing the corner of Second South and State noted the eruptions and hailed him The doctor took the patient Into the archway where he was examined by l Drs King JJcatty McKenna Monahan and Beer all of whom coincided that Phelps had undoubted symptoms of smallpox and his disease was afterwards found to he varlolold Phelps was at once loner lon-er to the t hospital On January Kb he tayH he was taken to the hospital at Butte as a suspect kept there ten days and then turned loose on Satur day last When he left Butte ho was feeling far from well and pustules broke out on tho way down Phelps says he rCa hcd Salt Lake at 005 yesterday morning and had not entered en-tered any dwelling coming straight sLrlbht from the depot The patrol wagon made a run to the scene and this and the presence of so many doctors caused 1 a big crowd to gather When It became known that a smallpox suspect was under surveil I unccI sunel lance there was good speed made by spectators to get away but these were soon replaced by others who In turn retreated There were no new cases except the above yesterday Dr King expects to liberate several persons from the lies pllul today |
