Show I GUV MOUNTS COURSE I Much comment is made in certain quarters of the action of Gov Mount of Indiana in refusing to recognize and respond to the requisition of thc socalled Governor of Kentucky to deliver de-liver up Gov Taylor to thoso in Kentucky Ken-tucky who are hunting his blood The Democratic press of Kentucky is very violent In its denunciation o him and it has extender to a few Democratic papers J the outside But there is i a j belief and it Is Justified by I tho acts I I Z r O the men In charge of affairs in Kentucky 1 Ken-tucky that the man who was elected Governor by a large majority could not obtain justice in that Slate When I as prominent a man as Gov 13uclner living in that State and knowing very well the character o the people concerned con-cerned himself a Bourbon Democrat from away back feels constrained to say as an honest man hat I the State officials and Legislature of Kentucky have 100000 of bipod money and they will use It to convict any politician politi-cian In high place whom they want to get rid off then surely the Governor of anadjoining State has no right on the requisition of one who holds his place as Governor by a very doubtful i title to give up to death a man who all his life has been an honorable man I We suspect the real truth Is that Gov Taylor had determined in Kentucky to I fight to maintain the place to which tho people of Ken tJclcJ had elected him that he had around him fighting I Minn thul I I the nil was flllorl with yin n lence and excitement and that possibly an adherent of his seeing the opportunity tunity and judging only by the ethics whicli have governed In Kentucky so long shot down Goebcl But it Is Incredible in-credible to believe that Coy Taylor had T any part in that or that he ever planned or conspired to do anything except to maintain his oflice against the illegal decree of the Legislature even at the expense of bringing on a civil war In that too he followed exactly the code which under or over the law has governed Kentuckians since befo the wa In thc first place under a law which Is denounced by the honest Democrats of Kentucky as utterly subversive of the rights of the people even under that law Coy Taylor obtained a full majority of the I votes of that State At the same time he knew that the power was In tho hands of the Legislature to arbitrarily oust him and that there was no appeal from that act In case It should be committed com-mitted and we havo no doubt he meant to light for his place That drew around him his friends and some of them were of that class of lighting men of eastern Kentucky who have made that region notorious through feuds and through the murders caused by 1 thc feuds for the past fifty years We suspect that one of them saw Goe bel bnd following the rule of his section I sec-tion and the gentral rulo of the State because the State authority has never been able to suppress that sort of thing hp killed Goebel and with n hundred thousand dollars reward a Gen Buckncr says for blood money It would be easy to supply the testimony testi-mony to convert that act of some characterless man Into a conspiracy Involving the Governor and to convict mm under It No doubt Gov Mount looks at the matter In that light 110unl and lrht ond he Is dead right In rIght assuming that while whie I I under the Jaw which subverts every principle of free oveinment government II a man has been given the title Sln tlLe of Governor of Kentucky his requisition is J not binding 01 the Governor of an tier Stale |
