Show STILL CROAKING Tho New York Evening Post thinks I I that thanks are due Representative McCall of Massachusetts for his speech against the army bill Tho gratitude of the Post is awakened because be-cause McCall declared that Ilhe war In the Philippines is an attack upon human hu-man liberty and called upon Congress Ito put an end to the war by the simple sim-ple process of telling the Filipinos that we intend to give them the right ot selfgovernment The most striking feature of all that Is the ogollsni displayed In offering It In substance McCall said I know better than Admiral Dewey better than Gen Otls better than the commission com-mission better than the Administration tho situation In the Philippines and better what should be done True the I Filipinos never owned their country they have always been n subject race but because the United States disenthralled disen-thralled them and relieved them from intolerable oppressions It IS I the duty now of our Government to haul down the flag while it is under fire and turn that empire over not to the decent people peo-ple there but to some cutthroats who for twentytwo months have been killing kill-ing our soldiers and such of their own countrymen as want peace It Is nothing to him that the officers who have been there for months and years declare that his Ideas are Utopian Uto-pian It Is nothing that the Chief Justice Jus-tice and AttorneyGeneral of Luzon are native Filipinos that they are both In full accord with what Is being done that they are backed by the decent men of their own race and that they agree that their countrymen are unfitted for selfgovernment and that to turn that country over to Agulnaldo and his bandits ban-dits would be a calamity unspeakable We have thought that the late election hud pretty well decided the views of the country In the North and West and that It had moreover shown that on the question of Imperialism the South Is In full accord with the Administration Administra-tion But the croak of the Massachusetts Massachu-setts Congressman Is renewed and I the Post applauds Its wisdom and justice jus-tice when In truth it Is against the spirit of our institutions and against the sense of justice of the American people What McCall really wants Is 1 the dishonor of the Hag and the disgrace dis-grace of the country by turning a country which Is ours over to some bandits to loot Were It to be done it would not be a year before the whole sinister crowd would be denouncing the act as ono of the moat unjust and cruel ever performed by a victorious Government in dealing with the responsibilities re-sponsibilities which a just war had Imposed Im-posed upon the Nation |
