Show SUPPRESSION 03 POLYGAMY Kind of Amendment Chairman Ray of House Committee Favors Washington Dec 10In view of tho movement for the suppression of polygamy and for uniform marriage and divorce laws Chairman Ray of the House Committee on the Judiciary having charge of this legislation has written a letter to those Interested in the movement In which he says For many years I have feared an amendment to the Constitution authorizing author-izing Congress to enact uniform laws regulating marriage and divorce which would cover polygamy An amendment to the Constitution merely prohibiting polygamy would amount to but little An amendment allowing Congress to pass laws punishing polygamy would apply to those localities where polygamy polyga-my Is practiced i that Is it I would enable ena-ble Congress to pass laws prohibiting and punishing polygamy In Utah and I one or two other localities where It Is practiced and allow prosecutions In the United States courts Every State has full power to prohibit and punish polygamy und every Stale has ant polygamy laws Utah has such a law Tho main trouble Is In tho enforcement enforce-ment of 11 |
