Show ps S AT REST Body of Late Minnesota Senator Sen-ator Placed in a Vault I FLOWERS COVERED CASKET r Masses of Bloom Surrounded the i Coffin as it was Laid Away Services Ser-vices Held at the Family Residence Delegations from the United States Senate and House of Hepre sentntlves State and Federal Offl 1 < dais in Attendance Floral Offerings 1 II I I Offer-ings wore Magnificent I m L St Paul Minn Dec 1The body of Senator Cushman K Davis was today placed in the receiving vault of the beautiful mortuary chapel at Oakland cemetery to be later privately given burial In deference to the aged parents pa-rents of the deceased it had been decided de-cided to have the services In the family residence which could hold but a small proportion of those who attended and hundreds of persons stood outside for hours in the ehljl December air while the beautiful words of the church were being rca < within the stricken home The < delegations from the United States Senate and ilousc of Representatives Represen-tatives members 6f the State Legislature Legisla-ture and a few close friends were admitted ad-mitted to the library and parlors J Tho relatives of Senator Davis remained re-mained In the front chamber on the second floor 1191100 of them being seen until tthey wont to the carriages reserved re-served for them In the group of mourners were Mrs C K Davis the widow Maj and Mrs H N Davis the Senators parents Judge and Mrs Bartlett Tripp and Mr and Mrs D D Morford the Senators Sena-tors two sisters with theii husbands The casket remained open until the close of the services Beautiful tributes of flowers filled the house with their fragrance President and Mrs McKinley had sent a beautiful beauti-ful wreath from the White Ilouse An immense wreath of chrysanthemums overlaid with while roses and orchids testified to the love and 1 esteem of the late Senators associates In the United States Senate From the OldTime Telegraphers of America of which Senator Davis was a member an emblem em-blem of 30 in white and pink roses was received The somber black casket cas-ket the only decoration of which was a burnished silver plate bearing the name Cushman Kellogg Davis was almost hidden beneath a floral bank Nearly every member of the State Senate all State and city officials and a delegation from the Minnesota House of Representatives were present The committees of the United States Senate and House of Representatives arrived a short time before tho funeral and were at the house and cemetery They were Senators Culiom Nelson Carter Spooner Hansbrough Pettlgrew and McBride escorted by Col D M Rams dell sergeantatarms of the Senate and Representatives J J Jenkins J T McClcary Joel Heatwole E C Stevens Ste-vens Loren Fletcher Page Morris and F M 1 Eddy escorted by Assistant SergeantatArms Iinney of tho House AM State and city offices were closed and business generally was suspended during the funeral while all flags were hvng at halfmast The services at the home at 11 oclock were of the simplest character Rev C D Andrews pastor of Christchurch Christ-church read the Impressive service of the Protestant Episcopal church assisted as-sisted by Rev Theodore Sedgwlck pastor pas-tor of the church of St John the Evangelist Evan-gelist who read the lesson Music was furnished by a mixed quartette Archbishop John Ireland a lifelong personal and political friend of the late I Senator Davis was present as ono of the mourners The funeral procession wended Us way to Oakland cemetery where Rev Dr Andrews read the committal service ser-vice while the body was placed in the vault In the little chapel In the center of the chapel and surrounded by mag nificent palms and cut flowers the cas ket l was placed and around this gathered gath-ered a group of men known in every quarter of the United States To the right of the caskr and rtlsfInrnlnVirwl by white sashes stood the colleagues the deceased statesman On the left were Got Lind and other State out cials and friends Mrs Davis widow of Senator Davis1 and Mr Davis his father occupied seats directly opposite the casket The mortuary chapel was crowded to its utmost capacity and fully 600 people peo-ple who were unable to obtain admit tan e waited outside until the funeral services were concluded Further music was given by the quartette during the committal services at the chapel Leaving the coffin In the midst of masses of beautiful flowers the assem bled mourners departed from the place of Interment and the final scene In the earthly life of a great statesmen had ended t |
