Show DREDGING CONFERENCE 1 qANATl AND CITY BBPBESENTA 1 I I JTIVES TO MEET TO Dredge Ten Miles of tho Jordan Would Cost 150000 Proposition to Divide the Cost The prcsldenta oC the various canal companies taking water from the Jordan Jor-dan river will meet next Tuesday with I I the committee of the City Council on Jordan Canal and Irrigation with a view of coming to some arrangement by which the canal companies will Join with the city In the work of dredging the Jordan river so as to draw off from 1 the lake an additional foot and a half of water from lowwater mark It Is possible also that the Salt Lake Water and Electrical Power company may join with the city Joseph Geoghegan the receiver of the company speaks 1 I favorably such a move and If satisfactory sat-isfactory terms can be arranged with i tho city his company would Join in the undertaking I The distance to be dredged Is i ten miles from Utah lake to the upper dam I seven miles of which Is soft clay bottom bot-tom while three miles at the end next the dam Is hard ravellhe cost to I lower the bed of the river sufficiently to draw off an extra foot and a half of the entire surface of the lake would be about 160000 which If divided among the four canal companies the power plant and the city would not be a very largo amount for each City Engineer I Kelsey is preparing plans oC tho work and an estimate of the cost to lay before be-fore the meeting next Tuesday The lake is now only one foot above low water mark and is rapidly sinking When the lake is at lowwater mark ery little water finds its way Into the I river not enough to supply one of the canal companies A little water was turned into then the-n w reservoir the cast bench yester 1 day to l keep the bottom cool The reservoir f reser-voir Is so far completed that 1C the iron pipe for the connections were here I it might be put In use at once It will probably however be a week or two before the pipe which was ordered by the city gets here Meantime the rest of the reservoir except the coping Is finished The laying of the new water mains in i the east side was stopped yesterday ton t-on account of the nonarrival of sufficient suffi-cient pipe to keep going Contractor I Moran expects the delayed shipments of pipe to arrive today |
