and breathed the spirit of brotherly love so manifest in his sermon on Sunday The archbishop said that while In the East he recoiled an Invitation from Bishop Scanlan to be present on the grand occasion of the laying of the cornerstone Ho accepted the Jnvl tntlon for two reasons first because Utah was once a part of his diocese and secondly because ever since It was separated from the archdiocese of San Francisco a feeling of affection had existed between himself and Bishop Scanlan The scene that presented pre-sented itself to him on yesterday more than repaid him and it would be remembered re-membered as one of the most happy events of his life He was pleased to see Salt Lake City represented in such large numbers He was pleased also because of the great generosity shown by the people of the diocese Irrespective Irrespec-tive of sect In helping the bishop to erect such a grand and magnificent building Continuing the archbishop said SPIRIT OF TOLERANCE HERE One thing that impressed me forcibly forci-bly on coming to Salt Lake was the spirit of tolerance which Is everywhere manifest The rule of liberty of conscience con-science is generally observed The Catholic church has ever been a strong upholder of this liberty A mans conscience con-science Is I and should be sacred Whoever Who-ever invades that liberty commits a wrong We may stand at the portals and plead and argue If we believe we are right but the moment we Invade the sanctity of conscience that moment mo-ment we are on ground which should be occupied by God alone I would be glad to have you all follow fol-low mo over the entire ground which I am traveling but IC you come only half way we must part good friends at the crossroad No reason when In obedience to conscience we part that there should be any ill feeling Coercion Co-ercion entering the sacred domain of conscience was never successful and it is only right that it should be so for who but our common Father has any right to interfere with what Is sacred to the Individual He rcfcricd to the action of Bismarck in trying to coerce the consciences of the citl zons of the German empire and which icsulled in a miserable failure and which too today Is talked of as one of the big mistakes of the great German Ger-man statesman FORGET DIFFERENCES When on Sunday we sing our hymns on the hill on which our cathedral ca-thedral will stand and others sing their hymns on their hills we differ as to the methods but AShen we comedown come-down to everyday life and mingle In social and business relations nil these differences are and should bo forgotten forgot-ten and all are brothers and members of a common humanity Tills Is the sentiment which I have always found In Utah and Jt Is a source of great pleasure to observe It He closed his happy remarks with a fitting anecdote of the late Civil war When the army of the North and the army of the South were encamped on opposite sides of lie I Roppahannook within hearing dlntnnce of each other each side naturally playing itq national nation-al airs the boys in blue played the Star Spangled Banner when from across the river came the strains of Dixie Thc result of this naturally was to Increase the warlike spirit on both skies As the notes of these two airs were dying away some one with a cornet sounded the air of Home Sweet Home which quelled the belligerent bel-ligerent spirit touched a common chord in the hearts on both sides and brought a tear lo many a poor soldiers eyes aw he dreamed of his home Referrng to Salt Lake his Grace said that it wns so centrally located that It was destined by nature to be a great city being the only available distributing dis-tributing point for this Intermountain region Tie gave practical advice as to what parents should do regarding their children when favored with wealth and that was to teach them the Importance and necessity of carving carv-ing a niche in the temple of success by their own hands for If they were left without wealth and without being taught to work they would be failures In life |
