| Show COL WOOD DJAD I WellKnown Railroad Man Dies Suddenly Sud-denly in Chicago Chicago Sept 22Col Joseph II I Wood grand marshal of the Grand Army parade during the recent national na-tional encampment in Chicago died of angina pcclorls at midnight at his residence Col Wood retired an hour before his I death apparently In perfect health At ll30 his wife noticed that he was I breathing heavily She tried to rouse him but could not A physician was summoned and when he arrived the Colonel was beyond medical skill He sank rapidly and died In a few minutes min-utes Col Woods father and mother died just as he did For twentyfive years Col Wood was assistant general manager of the Alton road but he left the employ after the Harriman syndicate gained control of the corporation Joseph H Wood was born In the Stale I of New York in 1839 He came of a family that had many fighters In the I famous battles of American history His father was a veteran of the war of 112 and his uncle fought In the Mexl oan < war and was present at the surrender sur-render of the City of Mexico After finishing his education he went Into business as a contractor and engineer working on thc Erie canal and in various va-rious parts of New York When he was 23 years old he entered the army and made a gallant record during the Rebellion He was a nephew of FightIng Fight-Ing Joe Hooker Col Wood wan a member of George H1JThomas post OA R He belonged tothe Loyal legion I the Western Society So-ciety of the Army of the Potomac and the Aztec club of NeV York the last named being an organization of officers who were present at the surrender the City of Mexico and their descendants descend-ants |
