Show State Opens Bids On Murray Freeway Bids were opened this week at the State Office Building on another "Million Dollar" Interstate Inter-state Highway project in Salt Lake County, according to C. Taylor Burton, State Director of Highways. The Tiago Construction Co. of Salt Lake, with abid of $1,128,-866, $1,128,-866, emerged as apparent low bidder among four contractors submitting bids. The official highway department engineer's estimate had been $1,129,310. The contract calls for grading and laying the roadbed for another an-other segment of Interstate 15, from 4500 to 5900 South. In addition, ad-dition, a four span concrete T-beam T-beam bridge 207 feet long will be included in the project. The bridge wil provide an overpass over 1-15 at Germania Street. Large amounts of material will be required for' the job, including more than one and one half tons of borrow, 210,000 cubic yards of unclassified road way excavation, as well as more than 1,000 cubic yards of Class A concret. Gravel for the embankments em-bankments will be brought in from pits near Germania St., Murray; Taylorsville, and west of Kearns. The contract provides that the work be completed within 240 working days. Already completed are embankments em-bankments for a section of 1-15 between 18th South and 27th South. This section was done by W. W. Clyde & Co. Currently in progress are two other projects by Gibbons and Reed Construction Co. A grading grad-ing contract between 1st and 8th South is virtually complete with only two thirds of the contract time having elapsed. A second Gibbons and Reed project between 8th and 18th South, about half finished, is also ahead of schedule. Grading from 28th to 45th So. wil begin during the current fiscal fis-cal year, Mr. Burton said. Elias J. Strong, Road Commissioner, Com-missioner, represents Salt Lake County on the policy making body. "Interstate 15 will be open all the way from Bountiful to Draper Crossroads by late 1966 or early 1967. It takes one or two construction seasons to bring in the fill for the embankments, of each section of Interstate highway, high-way, which in turn must be allowed al-lowed to settle for a year or even two years. Then a reason is required re-quired to build overpass and underpass structures after the fill has had time to settle. Only then can a modern freeway be poved. Signing, landscaping and beautification follow. This explains ex-plains why it seems to take so long to build these complicated modern highways," he said. 6 "Horse sense" is that faculty which keeps horses from betting on people. |
