Show Democrat Chairman Raps Bennett on Senate Absenteeism Wayne L. Carlson, Salt Lake County Democratic Chairman, Tuesday blasted Senator Wallace F. Bennett for his chronic absenteeism ab-senteeism on Senate votes. "The first 110 roll call votes through August 9 show Bennett missed 28," Mr. Carlson said. "In other words, he has been on the job less than 75 per cent of the time this year. He missed one out of every four votes. No other Utahn would last more than a month a his job if he showed up only 75 per cent of the time. Bennett's whole Senate career has been characterized by absenteeism. The pattern has been accentuated this year because be-cause he has been campaigning steadily since January. His ab- senteeism shows he is more interested in-terested in keeping his Senate seat for the sake of his own pride than for the purpose of serving the Utah people. "He has missed a long list of key votes this year. For example he missed four roll call votes on the United Nations bond issue, two on ' the defense appropriations ap-propriations which are so vital to Utah interests, two on Medicare, Medi-care, and two on the foreign aid authorization. Of course, Senator Bennett so consistently votes against progress that he does just about as much to help Utah when he is absent as when he is there," Mr. Carlson said. |
