Show Utah Catholics List Population Growth The Catholic population of Utah his increased 60.8 percent since 1951, it was announced by the Very Reverend Francis T. Kelleher, Chancellor of the Diocese Dio-cese of Salt Lake City. Father Kelleher said Catholics num bered 42,075 compared to 26,165 in 1951 and 40 541 last year. Percentage wise Catholics now are 4.7 per cent of Utah's total population. In 1951 they were 3.8 per cent. The figure compiled by the Diocese was released in the 1961 official Catholic directory which gives a statistical survey of the Catholic Church as of Jan. 1. The total U. S. Catholic population popu-lation was reported in the directory direc-tory to be 42,104 900. The figures fig-ures showed a ten year national increase of 13,470 022 or 47.04 per cent over the 28,634,878 in 1951. Only three states in the union have fewer Catholics than Utah: Alaska with 35,500; North Carolina Caro-lina with 41.969 and South Carolina Caro-lina with 33 819. The directory gave the following follow-ing Catholic population figures for the Mountain states: Idaho, 42 636; Wyoming, 48,-500; 48,-500; Nevada, 50,002; Arizona j 304 691; Colorado, 327 505; New, Mexico, 359,159; Montana, 153,-1 800. |
