King of Utah Thursday made an appeal to Hollywood star Paul Newman l to make his documentary mo-' mo-' tion picture on the harmful ef-1 ef-1 fects of tobacco available to the public schools of the nation. At the same time, Congressman King asked Dr. E. Allen Bate-man, Bate-man, Utah Superintendent of Public Instruction, to make a formal request to Mr. Newman for use of the film in Utah schools. In his appeal to Mr. Newman, who stars in the 20 minute documentary docu-mentary on the lung cancer menace men-ace of tobacco which he produced pro-duced at his own expense, the Congressman suggested that Mr. Newman premier the film in Salt Lake City. Mr. King offered to help the industry promote a special showing show-ing of the film for members of (Continued on page 8) Rep. King Asks Actor (Continued from Page 1) Congress, and suggested that Mr. Newman himself introduce the film to Congressional audiences in the event such a showing is arranged. In urging the actor to make his film available to the schools, the Congressman observed "I am confident, of course, that millions mil-lions of American youngsters will see it at their neighborhood theaters, but I feel your message might carry more impact if it were also delivered in the class room atmosphere." In asking the use of the film for Utah schools, he told Mr. Newman, "I am currently work-, ing with a group of Utah doctors and educators on a campaign in which a series of popular lectures lec-tures on the lung cancer menace would be presented by medical authorities at all the junior and senior high schools of my state." Last year Mr. King introduced a bill which would provide a matching federal fund to those states which desire them for the education of school children on the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other harmful consumables. 1 |
