Show ANARCHIST BERGMAN Quick Trial and Condemnation of the Wou Id-Be Assassin of Frick. HE PLEADS HIS OWN CASE, At the End of Which He Is Sentenced to Twenty-one Years in the Penitentiary Peni-tentiary and One Year in the Workhouse. Pittsbl-rg, Sept. 19. Alexander Bergman, Berg-man, the anarchist who tried to kill H. C. Frick, was placed on trial in the criminal court this morning. Bergman conducted his awn case, pleading not guilty. Frick took the stand and testified to the facts of the attempted assassination as already told in these dispatches. This evidence was corroborated by Vice-Chairman Leishman, the only witness of the assault, and Dr. Litchfield described the nature of Frick' s wounds. Bergman was perfectly cool during the progress of the trial. At the conclusion of the testimouy for the state Bergman refused to be sworn, but read iong statement in j his own defense, declaring hrs act was the outgrowth of the oppression of labor by cap-j cap-j ital, asserting the end of the struggle be- twecn them was uear, with the result of freedom to labor. His reason for shooting Frick was to rid the earth of an oppressor of workmen. The judge had finally to limit hiiu as to time and then cut olf his discourse. The jury returned a verdict of guilty without leaving their seats. Bergman was found guilty and sentenced to twenty-one years in the penitentiary and one year in the workhouse. When sentenced, sen-tenced, Bergmau said he did not expect justice jus-tice and did not get it. |
