The population is about 55,000, and is in-creasing at a rapid rate. It is situated at the base of the Wasatch mountain in a lovely valley, rich in agricultural re-sources and is eiglltSM miles distant from Great Salt Lake. Its elevation above sea level is 4,350 feet. It la 100x200 feet, the walls arc ItXl feet high, and the towers, when completed, will be 200 feet height. Over $3,500,000 have been expended on the temple, and It is now nearing completion. In the same square with the temple is the spa-cious building called Th s Tabereaole. Here are held the services of the mor-mon church and these are attended every Sunday by an immense congrega-Ho-of people, both mormon and gen- - tile. The structure ia oval in shape, eventy-fiv- e feet high and 250x150 feet In length and breadth. It has a seating capacity of 12,000 people, and here may be heard what is claimed to be the fin-est organ in the world. Patti once sang in the tabernacle, and demonstrated that its acoustic powers are very tine. The ti7do Hotue or Amelia palace, was built by Brigham Young who willed that it could be the residence of his favorite wife. Brisbane Voais'i Beeldenoe known as the Bee-Hiv- e and the Lion House are structures, curious from associations. Theae are situated in what was once Brigham Young's domain, all of which has passed lnt: other hands, save the largo lot in in which is Brigham Young's grave. Frospeot Hilt with its lookout, tower commands a splendid view of the city and its sur-roundings. This latter place or amusement wnj btxilt by Biigliam Young over thirty fears ago. ft is a large and beautiful teMnple and comfortably arranged. Aeaombly Hall, near the temple, is used in winter for worship by the mormons, the taberna-cle being too large to admit of proper betting. Assembly hall is 120x68 feet, ind cost S150.000. The ceiling is dec-orated which church pictures among Shem the Angel Moroni disclosing tho hiding place of the golden plates to Joseph Smith. Camp Douclae. three miles east of the city and over 4M feet above it is beautifully laid out in the miilst of lawns and orchards, and the barracks and houses of the officers sre built of stone. The post commands a wide view of the citv and beyond where Groat Salt Lake lies molten .si-lver at the foot of the western moun-tains. Reok'e Hot Sprtaga sre iu the northern part of t be city about three miles from the business center. They issue from the base of the moun-tains, and are regarded as a very valua-ble aid in cases of rheumatism dyspep-i- a and scrofullu. The waters are used both internally and externally, aud there is an excellent bath house and necessary appointment for the comfurf of patients. 1a Warn Sulphar Springe are between the Hot Springs and the cily, about one mile from the postoffioa. There is a good hotel and comfortabls bath house in connection with the springs, and they cn be reached by street railway. Tk Mo am v. are unsurpassed in magnificent conons. and at least a dozen of the grandest are within reach of the city. These invito the tourist to spend davs, weeks or months among their wild recesses to fish, to hunt, to scale tho peaks and ridges, and to gather wild flowers by the mossy springs, beneath the shade ol umbrageous pines. Big Cottonwood canon should no seen by every tourist. Here are lake Mary and Martha from which flows the turbulent Cottonwood river; aud at the base of the mountains are lakes Blanche, Florence and Lilian. Besides these are Mills creek. Parley's Emigration, and City Creek canons, all extremely picturesque and delightfully romantfo. Ploaean! ' Abound in scores around the outskirts of the city, along the quiet country roads, and through the lanes dividing meadows of rich green alfalfa and lields of grain; while the majestic mountains are never entirely lost sight of. From under the branches of trees and above hedges of the wild dog rose glimpses are caught of snow covered peaks. A drive to Fort Uouglas. and then a mile further out to the loouth of Emigration canon is almost delightful. It was here that the sight of the mormon pioneers was first made glad by the V09l expause of Sjlt Lake valley suddenly burst, upon them, on the 24th of July, 18-1- The Ureal Salt l.ke. Europe and America, and where can I say I have ever seen more won-dero-coloring, more electrifying edfaota than in the sunset on the (reat Salt Lake of Utah." Salt Lake is as oenuti-fu- l a sheet of water as can be found anywhere. The waves are bright blue r green, and as they dance on its stirfaee It would be bard to tell whioh color pre-vails.
