ABOUT FOUB HUNDRED MEN LEFT Fort Douglas this Morning with Rations and 50,000 Rounds of Ammunition. The soldiers at Fort Douglas have gone to fight the Indians. Eight companies com-panies left Salt Lake this morning on the Union Pacific. About 9:80 o'clock last night orders yvera received at the reservation from General Brooke at Pine Kidge agency ordering the soldiers to report at Fort Robinson, Neb., and await further orders. The news camo on the boys with tho suddenness of an avalanche, and they had supposed that the possibility possi-bility of being ordered into iorvice was very slim. However, How-ever, they heard the alarm Rounded on the stilly night throughout the garrison and soon all was activity. All night long they worked boxing supplies sup-plies and preparing for a fight witli the redskins. When Morning Cam long line of wagons loaded with ra ItioDs came into Salt Lake and halted at the Union Pacific depot. Tho boxes and luggage were stowed away in the cars, and about 8 o'clock eight companies com-panies of soldiers, under command of Major J. M. Andrews and Major John B. Parke, marched to the station. The scene was one of activity, aud soon all were in the cars wailing to start. The train was made up of sixteen cars, one pullman for the officers, two for the artillery, ouo stock, four luggage and eight fur the privates. The three pioees of artillery are Gat-ling Gat-ling guns which will make the Indians I see their bunting grounds before sun- v down, Th Right Companies and their officers are: Company II, Twenty-first infantry, Captain Corn-man; Corn-man; Company F, Twentv-n'rst infantry, in-fantry, Captain Wittich and First Lieu-tenantEltonhead; Lieu-tenantEltonhead; Company D, Twenty-;t Twenty-;t first infantry, Captain Bradley and ' First Lieutenant Henry and .Second Lieutenant McCaskey; Company B, ? Twenty-first infantry, Captain Joslln i and Second Lieutenant Stvre: Com- pany D, Sixteenth infantry, Captain Murlson; Company E, Sixteenth infantry. in-fantry. Captain "Ward and Second Sec-ond Lieutenant Ballon; Company G, Sixteenth infantry, Captain Rich-els Rich-els and First LioutenaBt Wright ami Second Linutenant'Gregg; Co., II, Sixteenth infantry, Capt. Wad ley and First Lieutenant Lassiter and Second Lieutenant Nichols. Major Andrews will command the Uwenty-first and Major Parka the Sixteenth. Surgeon, (J. L. Edie. H'he staff officers and Co., IS, Sixteenth remain in charge at the Eort. The ioldiers expect to reach Fort Robinson some time Saturday or Sunday. |
