The Times yeetcrdivy presented a full syn-opsis of tho most important events that transpired in the world during 1HD0. It was a strange and interesting medley of prosperity and adversity; of comedy und tragedy; of health and disease; of joy and sorrow. In other words, it was a picture of life as it is. We are glad to say that in Utah the good side pre-dominated. That the year may bring with it an abundance of good things for all humanity and temper its adversity is the wish of This Times. Supplementing the recent mass meet-ing held in lheDeuver chamber of com-merce, urging the passage of a free coinage bill, cunics iin address to the country setting forth the tame demand. It is a proper demand, only that the intemperate language used to further it is in bud tasto. It will be conceded that if any one, the United States sen-ate is friendly to free coinage, nnd if tlinl body nevertheless suggested acom-prom'iM- e it must have knowti that the passage of the ultimate measure was at this time impracticable. But for the unconditional stand of both sides in the mouey controversy a measure might have been adopted, or might still be adopted, that would remove tho dis-tress which the Denver address so ve-hemently depicts. There is nothing to be gained by demanding the Impossible, and it is impossible to force through congress at this session a free coinage bill. II will come in time arid that time illicit bo sped by an intermediate step that will relieve the immediate strin-gency and at the s.tmo time disabuso the eastern mind of the fear instilled into it that free coiuage means ruin. That the senate census measure met the two requirement namud we sin-cerely believe. Bi adslreets says: "The rise in the market price of silver a fort-night ago faithfully reflected the antici-pation of legislation directing increased absorption of silver for currency pur-poses. Tho commercial price in Lon-don was Slid per ounce on December HI and $10.8 in New York, while at the same time quotations for the specula-tive bullion certificates traded in here rose as high as $1.10. This has been followed by a rapid decline, which this week has carried prices to 48d per ounce in London and $1.08 here for commercial oars and $1.02$ for bullion certificates." The question is simply whether we care to deal with a theory or a condition. With this modification Salt Lake and Utah can well afford to Btipport Denver. Anyway, this year will be free from general elections. Si'iNNF.it died with the old year, an honest relic of ye olden times. Emma Abhott has rare business abili-ties- . Good management is as useful as ' a good voice. Germany's standing army has at last found emploriumt. It is watching tnr J Koch's lympisaK ytt( Now thai the Nebraska militia has been ordered out wo expect the hostiles will ileo precipitately. To-ha- we enter upon the last de-cade of tliis eventful century. We hope it may be a prosperous decade. A PRACTICAL STEP. While congress is busy killing time. Secretary Blaine is not wasting his sub-stance in the samo way. With charac-teristic energy he follows his ideas of reciprocity to a practical conclu; sion. The state department at Wash-ington has issued a circular letter stating that in pursuance of the recom-mendations of the international Ameri-can conference, a bureau of American republics has been estab-lished at Washington, having for its jbject the dissemination of authentic and useful information concerning the commercial conditions and advantages of the several American republics, lor the benefit of manufacturers, merchants and, others who may be interested in the extension of trade. Among its other functions the bureau will prepare, print and issue, from time to time, for joe distribution, bul- - letins containing particulars con-cerning the existing customs tarilf of tho several countries, and such changes in these as may occur, the offi-cial regulations which affect the en-trance and clearance of vessels, and the importation and exportation of mer-chandise at the ports of the several countries; also quotations from com-mercial and parcel post treaties be-tween any of the Auiericau republics, with the statistics of commerce and other information of special iuterest. The secretary of state says in his cir-cular letter that "the bureau will at all times bo available as a medium of com-munication and correspondence to per-sons applying for reasonable informa-tion pertaining to the customs tariffs and regulations, and to the commerce and navigation of the American repub-lics, and any suggestions as to the character ot information that may be found useful will receive careful at-tention." It has been charged that our mer-chants aro laboring under a disadvan-tage in competing with Europeans for the South American trade because they are ignorant of the conditions under which it should lie carried on. With the information provided them by the state department it would be strange indeed if our smart manufacturers and merchants did not remove this disad-vantage. If our trade with our south-ern neighbors is to be increased by a liberal policy of reciprocity it is nec-essary for us to know just precisely how to deal with them. It will bo the fault of our people if they still plead igno-ronc- e on their part in the future. Four Doit.las is all but deserted. A happy new year to the boys, and may they soon return without accident. It is unnecessary to say that The Times will continue to be what its name indicates. Up to the moment as it were. Happy New Year. A telei iit am from Fairfield, Maine, says the thermometer registered tiO degrees, below zero yesterday morning. The thermometer or tho telegram lied. Let us hope that Banker MeCorniek was right when he told a Times reporter the money stringency would pass off when the new year's balances are closed. It was during 18'.0 that the Salt Lake Stock and Real Estato exchanges were organized. They are botli centers of energetic enterprise. Prosperity to thetn in 1891. The new associate justice of the su-preme court. Brown, once shot a bur-glar. May his aim at the greater bur-glars that will come before him in his present capacity, be as true. It required (leneral Miles' headquar-ters in the saddle to start tho war at a time when the unfriendly Indians in the bad lands had surrendered and were on their M ay to the reservation in charge of the army. The best proof of Salt Lake's natural progress during the year 110 may be found in the buikl'ng record, in the in-crease of banks ami the extension of rapid transit. No othor city can com-pare with this in respect to these things. A few men in Tennessee have dis-covered a new solution of the race problem. They arranged a whisky drinking match between a couple of ne-groes, who drank themselves to death. The white men, we regret to say, sur-vive. The most disappointing news apropos of New Year comes from New York. Mr. Depew tells his friends that y he will swear off aftenlinner speaking. In other words he will deprive tho country of the sweetest morsels of ail the dinners he attends. The faith enrists are holding a con-vention in Ohio and the first thing we know they will elevate themselves to the dignity of a national body and nom-inate a presidential ticket. There are several other parties, notably the farm-ers alliance, that live on faith. A exehango believes the capture made in Pittsburg on C hristmas d;iy by government detectives of a gang of uo less than nineteen Italians interested in the passing of counterfeit silver pieces indicate that there is a vast conspiracy still to be unearthed. It is believed that the money is made in New York, and dispersed over the country by per-- I sons who aro thought unlikely to be suspected. Eleven hundred counter-feit dollars were found in the possession of this Pittsburg gaug. This sort of thing must be put down with a strong hand. A man in New York was leaning against an electric lamp post when thd wires were crossed and he was killed instantly. The moral of this is, avoid electric lamp posts. Iff you won't swear off todsy, adhere to the way. It is still the best. |
