Show TIIK SALMON OKKINANCK. A more insidious ordinance than that proposed by somo of the prohibitionists in the city council bus never been df-vised. df-vised. The idea that the objection of ono man living next to :( saloon should sulliee to move the latter is incompatible with any sense of f:iiniess or justice. It simply puts tho saloon nt the mercy of any one who chooses to ruin its business. busi-ness. We take it that so long as we exact a high license from this kind of trade it ought to have some rights that even its enemies should respect. The clause proposed that no saloon should bo tolerated within twenty rods of any school conceals under a llimsy disguise a most crafty purpose. There is little fear that the saloon ami school will ever come in conflict, the one being of necessity located in the business part of the city ami the other outside. Hut the ordinance would place it into the power of any ni:tn to start or pretend to start a school near or above a saloon for the solo reason of driving the latter out. If the city council desires to enact prohibition, pro-hibition, let it do it openly and boldly ami accept the consequences. This underhanded un-derhanded design is too cowardly to commend itself to upright men. |
