The greatest meeting that has ever been held in Richmond, and probably in the country, was the one conducted by the Rev. Sam Jones. It waa for men only. , The Tabernacle scats 11,000 persons. Every seat was taken, and not less than 1,000 stood np. 'On the outside of the structure were probably 1,000 more, and hundreds went away when they found they could not get seats. Not less than 14,000 or lo.OOO men came to hear the preacher. The sermon had a powerful effect upon tho congregation. At its close Mr. Jones asked all who would promise to live bet-ter lives and give up sinful habits to stand np. Not less than 10,000 men arose. It was a sight never seen hero. The preacher then asked all who were not church members and who wanted to become Christians to come up and shake his hand. Hundreds pressed forward with tears in their eyes. Not nearly all could get to the preacher, as the crowd was so dense. It is estimated that no) less than 1,000 persons were converted, among them many solid and substantial business men. Some of thom were peo-ple who had not before heard Mr. Jones, and who had ridiculed his stylo of preach-ing. Cor. Norfolk Virginian. K0T1CC 10 (KKD110KS. Kstate of F.llr.a Marker deceased. HEN8V O. MCMILLAN. OrV Uy Oeo. V. Iejmia, Deputy Clerk. The Dwarfs of AMua. CAIRO, Egypt, Aug. 5,-- Stanley has told of the race of dwarfs he met in darkest Africa there has been much inter-est manifested in them here. It is a pity that none of these Lilliputian warriors was caught and brought back by the explorers. So far as I know, none of these little imps was ever put under the scientific micro-scope. The nearest approach to this was made some sixteen years ago, when two of them were brought to this city from a dis-trict distant more than a year from Khar-toum, and were examined by several gen-tlemen. The older wasdecided to beabout 30 and was found tone 48 years of ago, inches high and to measure " He weighed about 05 around tne breast. pounds. The younger did not seem to be old, and was inches more than 10 years n height. They both were of a light brown color, had woolly ha r, flat nose, and well developed brains. A more the examination of this curious race ough pigmies, which had already won a place l 2,000 years ago, is much to be desired! It Would have been tothoever-disgrac- e of Mr. Stanley, however, sake of any such sci- - if he had, for tbe curiosity, given to one of these wee ntific in his ranks which his prisoners a plac3 own disabled men werefused.
