Show Why It Is Foolscap. It is often asked why a certain kind of paper is known by the name of "foolscap." "fools-cap." When Oliver Cromwell became Protector, after the execution of Charles I, he caused a stamp representing the cap of liberty to be placed upon the paper pa-per used by the government Soon after af-ter the restoration of Charles II he had occasion to use some paper for dispatches, dis-patches, when some of this paper was brought to him. On observing the stamp he asked its meaning, and on being informed in-formed he said: "Take it away; I will have nothing to do with a fool's sap!" |
