Theal told the assessor that ha didn't want the dog, h:d tried to drive it away, and finally offered the officer a quarter cf a dollar to lake the dog away. Still Theal wa obdurate and the mayor sent him to the city prison for two davs. s After hi release he sued the mayor, chief of police and the officer who' arrested ar-rested him tor SoOOO damages each. In the court of the trial it w discovered discover-ed that in 187 Mayor Reed tailed to qualify a mayor, and though be did so in llt) it was invalid under the statutes, stat-utes, which require an Interval of two years. la consequence the Jury today returned a verdict for the plaintiff. The effect will be to Invalidate every act of the mayor the past two years. The ordinances are void, commitments to prison Illegal, eto. The city is all "torn up" over the affair, and all because of a 10 cent dog. |
