Nearly five million dollars were oollected within a few days and placed in the hands of the Johnstown relief committee. Soon after it was whispered that a part of the funds were misapplied, but tho rumor was denied. Now it is revived with a statement so detailed that it bears internal evidence of truth. We are sorry for it, not only because the victims for whom the money was intended inten-ded were cheated out of it at the time of their direst need, but also because it shakes one's confidence in man's humanity hu-manity and honesty even in the face of so apailing a calamity, and in case of another such call it will cause many to hesitate before contributing anything towards the relief of those who may never bo relieved thereby. |
