Show THE DEPARTMENT OF ARIZONA. Point From the Report of Gen. Grieraon, . Commanding;. Washington, Oct. 28. In his annual report upon the operations of the army in the department of Arizona, Brig. Gen. Grierson, commanding, says that now that Forts McDowell and Varde have been abandoned, with a view to their . early transfer ; to the interior department for Indian school purposes, the authorities should consider the advisability of re-ducing re-ducing with the least possible delay the number of Indians in the vicinity of the San Carlos agency, by the removal of the Yuma and Mojave Indians to . those reservations. Keeping so many ' Indians at San Carlos, he says, is detri-mental detri-mental to their advancement, It tends to the renewal of ,old feuds. The white men have taken up nearly , all the hunting and grazing grounds of the peaceable Yavai Suppoi .Indians in Cataract Canon, Arizona, nd these. Indians have become exasperated exas-perated to such a degree that trouble is likely to arise at any time. Therefore Gen. Grierson recommends tthat the "Black Tanks" their heriditary Printer camps taken from them by white' men two years ago, be restored; that their reservation be enlarged and their title made good. The report says: . "The surveys show that a railroad can be constructed throughout the Grand canyon of the Colorado at a feasable cost and liberal encouragement should be given by the government to hasten its completion, and open up that famous wonderland '. now beyond the roach of mnny. Gen. Grierson disapproves of the proposition made by the Indian inspector in-spector to organize regiments of Indians In-dians as a dangerous experiment. The posts at Forts Lowell, Grant and Bayard, Bay-ard, says the general, can be abandoned without detriment to the service, and such of the troops stationed there as cannot be provided for in New Mexico and Arizona may be remanded elsewhere. else-where. The po9t at Fort Union could be abandoned at once by transferring troop G, sixth cavalry, to Fort Win- fate; company C, tenth infantry, to brt Marcy and company H, of that regiment, to Fort Stanton. General Grierson renews the recommendation that the present military reservation at San Pedro, Cal., be enlarged as it is the most available place for a harbor adjacent ad-jacent to Los. Angeles. The small and poorly situated post of San Diego, Cal., should be disposed of, nnd a morp suitable reservation obtained ob-tained without delay, in order that a large post may be permanently established estab-lished at that important seaport, and facilities afforded for the 'proper fortification forti-fication of Point Loma.
