Show OPENING OF THE reservation express vernal utah E B linnen of the general land office at washington who arrived in vernal last monday for the purpose of securing a location for the new land office and to arrange for the other preliminaries in advance of the opening of the uintah reservation was seen by the express representative and asked to give out any information that he was at liberty to release for the benefit of the general public in regard to the method to be followed in reply mr linnen stated that while the exact rules that will govern have not yet been definitely settled by the department the general outline of the proclamation la which opened the rosebud reservation in dakota last year will be followed in the bill providing for the opening of the uintah reservation september 1st ast is fixed as the date when it will occur and as sixty days must elapse between the issuance of the presidents proclamation and the opening it is therefore thought that the former will occur about july following the rules of the rosebud opening several points of registration will be designated vernal of course will be one and probably mack price and possibly salt lake will be other points the registration will probably begin within two weeks after the issuance of the presidents president Ps proclamation it will be a part of mr linnens necessary details for duty to arrange the the registration such as providing quarters booths etc he expects that the registration will be very heavy and a force of thirty extra clerks will be sent out from washington to do the work at the different points at the rosebud opening there were persons registered and there were 2600 claims there seems to be a difference of opinion regarding the probable number that will register for the present opening sorn some e placing the number as low as and some as high as inspector linnen is of the opinion that the number will be large and states that the people here do not realize what an avalanche is coming between now and sept 1st ast the total area of the uintah reservation is acres of this amount approximately will be required for indian allotments lot ments and the balance will be subject to entry under the provisions of the bill opening the reservation under the federal statutes each will be required to pay per acre aside from the regular filing fee the rules governing the payment of this per acre will be published immediately following or at the same time the opening proclamation is issued and will not be known until then inspector linnen is of the opinion that 25 cents per acre will be required down and the balance when final proof is made the general land office has recently decided that the state will not be entitled to any interest in the lands of the reservation consequently there will not be any school lands nor state selections of any kind |
