Show BODY OF WATER TAPPED statesman boise idaho the water has been tapped in the lincoln mine at pearl and is being drawn off without the least hitch in the plan arranged for handling it in the old works there were some 2000 feet of drifts raises and inclines filled with water the crosscut cross cut level run from the new shaft intercepted the old works about seventy feet below the water level to tap these without incurring risk was a somewhat delicate problem but it has been successfully solved A clever plan was arranged by manager edwards for handling the water in the crosscut cross cut a very strong bulkhead was put in with a dool do or hinged at the top this door was heavy and made with beveled edges to fit into the f frame ame closely it was kept raised held in place dy y a rope passing back through the crosscut cross cut culand and up the shaft to a point above the wat water F level this rope could be cut at any in the crosscut cross cut or in the shaft dropping thedoor the door in the event of the water coming in all the men had to do was to retreat through the door and sever the rope permitting the door to fall and hold the flood the plan worked perfectly A large part of the water had drained of through the crosscut cross cut before the old works were tapped but there still remained a large body the men were able to get away without especial hurry the door was dropped and the water held through the frame of the door a large pipe was inserted with a valve on the outer side through this pipe the water is now being let into the crosscut cross cut just as fast as it can be handled by b the pump in the shaft |
