Show NOTES ABOUT CAMP the group of claims owned by geo rice and the hedges brothers adjoining the margaret mine is considered especially valuable owing to its location in the recent strike on the johnny mine ore running from four to seven ounces gold has been drifted on about fifty feet it is being milled and averages about per ton the wasp claim is in the town iown of state line or comprises a portion of the townsite it is owned by C E peak and associates one hundred feet of work has opened a small vein of good milling ore the utah spur is patented ground lying about 2000 feet northwest from the ophir with shallow shafts and openings all in ore it is owned by newell knight of provo and david evans of salt lake city the gold haven claim adjoins the creole and has a shaft to a depth of fifty feet where it caught the creole vein but the interference ter tec ference of water we learn has hindered further development it is owned by J W mcburney wm win jewell wm win brown and harry turner the oracle stateliness Stat elines only paper is vigorous and aggressive and i is doing all in its power to attract the attention of outsiders to the splendid and almost unrivaled mineral resources of the camp with the growth of the district the oracle will come in for its share of increased prosperity and perchance it will then blossom out into a daily the sulphides Sulp hides is the name of a group of patented claims owned by state senator mcgrath of detroit michigan the development of the sulphide consists of foot shaft and feet of tunneling E h monaghan is superintendent and has stripped the vein on the surface for a considerable distance the sulphides Sulp hides is regarded as a splendid possession the free coinage property lies adjoining the johnny and margaret mines it is owned by the hedges brothers and is about to be sold to an eastern syndicate T there here is about feet of work performed in the development of the property the same being shafts and drifts from which good ore has ben taken three claims are included in the group and they cover some pod good ledges of ore it is said that a former owner of aa an un divided one half interest in the johnny property bought it for a jug of whiskey and offered it for 25 but could not get that price it had less surface showing than nearly any other prospect in the district in n its development 25 sacks of ore were shipped that netted 2700 and two cars were shipped which netted the company and per ton respectively the camp of stateline Stat eline i is s easily accessible from modena on the san pedro road a fine mountain road of sixteen miles connecting the district with the railroad the town is admirably located and is well represented in a business way any of the mines of the camp can easily be reached by wagon and the winters are so mild the climate so salubrious and healthful that work in mine operation can be carried on the entire year W J Me mcburney Burney and Z drake of state line grant H smith of salt lake city and S H courtney of santa cruz cal own four claims on mineral hill north of the johnny and adjoining the johnny ground the group is known as the gold belt which has only been prospected on the surface by openings on the ledges which parallel each other the last vein opened measures between four and five feet and can be tapped by a tunnel at feet the tunnel is now in about feet situated west of the willowvale willowdale Willow vale and south of the big fourteen is the amazon fraction a single claim owned by W J mcburney and associates besides other work a fifty foot shaft has been sunk on a ledge which has b been een traced on the surface for a long distance and has every evidence of permanency the vein at the bottom of the shaft measures three feet in width and a rich streak about half the width of the vein carries values of about 25 in gold with some silver the sunflower or big fourteen is a group of claims on the west slope of rice mountain owned principally by cedar city people the group has been surveyed for patent one of the claims the sunflower has had considerable development work done in shafts drifts and dinzes comprising feet in depth where ore from four to six feet wide of good values have been drifted and sunk upon for more than fifty feet col andrew corry and others of cedar city are owners of the property henry auringer Hu ringer and john erickson are sole owners of a group of five claims adjoining the big fourteen or sunflower group on which they only a few months ago commenced active development work already however they have driven a tunnel into the po porphyry country rock for a distance of feet in their endeavor to crosscut the vein which is large and carries 4 per ton on the surface without assistance these two courageous young men cooper co oper abed in the undertaking and while one works corli ap on a salary and contributes to the support of the other the latter and alone drives on and on in search for the goal of his ambition did any owners of any of the bonanzas of utah the rocky mountains or the world over ever labor harder or under more difficulties the mining review joins their many friends in hoping that a silver king or daly daiy west will be their reward W J mcburney sports a pet in the little chester mine that few mines possess it is a rat which has its nest about midway between the mouth and face of the tunnel and which mr mcburney feeds and cares for with every care and kindness rats in the old mines are an index of the safety of the mines and when the rats take their leave from a mine miners follow in quick succession and invariably it is said a cave in follows As sailors quit a ship when the rats leave so do miners follow the rodent in its flight from danger A G bast and W B D hance of the state line mercantile company are also interested in some of the good properties of the mining camp they and the kenyon estate own the grand central group patented adjoining the johnny which has had sufficient development work performed to demonstrate its value should not its location alone suffice they also own a group adjoining the ophir which without question or doubt is valuable ground it is known as the summit group they likewise own the claim their store and a portion of the camp is built on in n making a trip to the mining camps of southern utah over the san pedro line or salt lake route few persons would make note of the splendid track much less of the engineering feature of the road for instance from milford south for a distance of forty miles the road is built as the crow flies perfectly straight with not the slightest curve in all that great distance which feature we believe is unexcelled in the history of railroad construction in america As an old time railroad man expressed it maybe the fruit trains wont do some running when they strike this piece of road from california to the east while the nevada spur property is just across the line in nevada it is in reality in the stateline Stat eline camp and is regarded as one of the best showing properties on the surface in the district the group contains seven claims which has in the neighborhood of feet of work done on it shafts and drifts constituting tho the development from this property 35 tons of ore was milled which netted the owners an average of per ton after all mining freight and milling charges were deducted E even ven th the e surface dirt shows values almost any place on the property the nevada spur is owned by joseph johnson of stateline Stat eline geo F buel is one of the industrious prospectors who stuck his stake in the state line camp and is devoting his labors to the development of two properties in which he is interested one is the atlas group of six claims a mile south of the town on which he has a fifty foot shaft and a foot crosscut in the vein from which the values go in gold and some silver per ton george tryon is associated with him in the ownership of the atlas group the other property is the texas group of three claims on rice mountain which joins the sun flower on the north on this latter property 8 mr buel has a fifty foot shaft and foot open crosscut cross cut the shaft is opening into ore pat superintendent of the johnny is making a record for himself in the exploration operation and development of this great mine in which a most import ant strike e was recently recorded this strike was made on the foot level in the new workings in the west drift for feet this level was run on a fine body of ore carrying values of from 20 to 40 in gold to the ton about two weeks ago the values in the ore increased materially and now as says from 80 to ago per ton in the wall street metal and the deposit is seemingly seem permanent and of wide area the ore from this rich strike is being run through the mill this find has enthused and encouraged every mine and claim owner in in the cam camp in the mouth of the canyon between the town and the johnny mill not more than halt half mile from either is a group of three claims known as the little chester group which are known as the little chester tip top and the lamont lament they adjoin the johnny ground on the east and the creole on the west and are believed to contain the creole and johnny veins with this belief the owners are driving a working tunnel from the north side of the ground purposely to catch the ore bodies at depth for purposes the tunnel is now in a distance of four hundred feet and is still being pushed on with a single shift of men the little chester is owned by W J mcburney of stateline Stat eline and dr hector griswold salt lake lak e city mr mcburney is superintending super intending the work the good hope group of e f ight mining claims was sold by joseph johnson to dr hamilton of wyoming and mr RICO rice of sharon pa who have been progressive in developing the mine mr johnson still owns a group of seven claims adjoining the good hope which is known as the meerschaum group and which he values as splendid mineralized ground he owns a group 0 of four claims on the north end of rice mountain and has interests in three claims south of the johnny only prospect work has been done on the rice mountain property seven claims constitute the good hope group between the johnny and venus south of the margaret from the development w work or k splendid ore has been uncovered some showing values as higham high as in gold and 1400 ounces of silver |
