Show coal industry at coalville Co alville 0 le BY J E PETTIT IT during the past four years the production of coal in the summit county coal field of utah has been on the decrease when until the close of 1916 but two of the four producing mines were in operation viz the grass creek mine operated by the union fuel company and the chalk creek mine operated by chappell brothers at the close of 1916 the union fuel company decided to close its mine in grass creek canyon this action meant that summit county would have to depend on the wyoming mines for its coal supply with an abundance of good domestic coal underlying coalville Co alville city and vicinity realizing this condition a number of local men took a lease on the grass creek property of the latter day saints mormon church which had been turned back to the church by the union fuel company and organized the grass creek lefuel company which is now operating the property and producing tons per day which production is increasing and will continue to increase property was in bad condition an immense amount of development wor work kwas was necessary to put this property on a producing basis as the major part of the pillars had been extracted and it was necessary to clean up and timber old eaves caves and make a new haulage road through many of the old workings it was also advisable and necessary to change from steam to electrical equipment which was made possible by extending the high tension lines of the utah power light company from coalville Co alville a distance of six and a half miles the chalk creek mine located one and one half miles east of coalville alville Co has an output of thirty tons per day the major part of which is sold to the wagon or local trade on the weber river the weber coal company property the weber coal companas Comp anys property known locally as the wasatch mine located two miles east of the coalville Co alville depot has been closed for the past three years until recently this company is controlled by the bamberger interests of salt lake clarence bamberger being manager this company is a subsidiary of the ontario silver mining company of park city this state the property was acquired in the by the late R C chambers to supply fuel for his mines and mills in that camp owing to the present demand for coal caused by war conditions the owners as a patriotic duty and at a very heavy expense are watering unwavering un the mine and putting it in shape for the production of tons per day coal mining engineer salt lake city the grade and curves of the railroad track from coalville Co alville to the mine being too heavy and short respectively tor for the present day equipment it was found necessary to rebuild the entire spur the contract being let to the christenson construction company which completed the grading early in the year the summit fuel the summit fuel company formerly the superior fuel briquette company is developing ve its property located one mile south of coalville Co alville A new slope south of the present slope is being driven to avoid old workings and maintain a good haulage road into some coal deposits supposed to lie to the south and east of the present workings no coal has hag been shipped from this property thus far this season but with the completion of the railroad spur and slope a small amount may soon be put on the market |
