Show park city C ty prospered in n 1917 BY jeromr JEROME B IRELAND park city a name to conjure with for nearly a half century mention of this camp has brought to the experienced miner visions of big mines and deep workings and of a steady stream of silver from its treasure vaults which has helped mightily in the enrichment ri rich ment of the state and the nation located only thirty five miles by railroad southeasterly from salt lake the latter city has been and still remains the natural outlet from there during the year just closed approximated tons which is an advance of over 1916 and of 7 over 1915 the judge the district has added zinc to its other resources of late years and an event of importance in 1917 was the placing in commission of the new zinc smelter of the judge mining alining smelting smelling Sm elting company con R V WIN mouth of the main tunnel judge mining smelling smelting Sm elting company for these stores of new wealth and there are numberless fine homes and business structures there which were built upon the firm foundation of silver from the great camp much of the wealth of the city of the saints came from there and a large percentage of the fortunes of its idle rich were first founded upon the ores from park cites hills and now after all its forty odd years of heavy production the camp emerges from the year 1917 with a record of achievement which surpasses any similar period in the past figuring tonnage from park city is scarcely a fair comparison with other districts for the reason that the camp contains many milling plants and about half the tonnage reported as sent to the smelters shelters sm elters is made up of high grade concentrates total shipments of crude ores and concentrates st ruction of this plant was commenced late in 1916 it is similar in design and process employed to the big refinery of the anaconda copper mining company at great falls montana but with a number of new and original devices added the ore is subjected to a leaching process and then precipitated upon aluminum cathodes of a revolving type deposition being accomplished by an electric current the plant was designed to treat about forty tons of concentrates a day and to turn out from fifteen to eighteen tons of refined spelter daily the cost is said to be not over 3 cents a pound and the spelter produced is about as nearly pure as could be desired being above 99 per cent the new smelter treats concentrates from the companas comp anys main mill which average from 40 to 45 per cent in their zinc content the cost of the completed plant was between and the judge lias has one of the largest estates in the district as well as one of 0 the most modern and complete mining and milling equipments in the west under the able direction of george W Lain lambourne bourne of salt lake general ina manager nager for the company the property is proving to be one of the great producers of the country the acquisition of the big snake creek tunnel in 1916 and ts LS extension into judge territory is enabling the company to mine its ores at depth and at a minimum of expense and always to keep the ore reserves well in advance of production the company was second in the district in 1917 in the total of crude ore and concentrates shipped the preliminary figures crediting it with tons it paid its four regular quarterly dividends of 25 cents per share or a total of each of approximately tons its heaviest month was november with tons and its lightest february with 2110 the company pays dividends with the regularity of clock work and with an entire absence of noise and publicity they fall due upon specified dates each third month the four quarterlies of 15 cents each in 1917 amounted to and raised the companas comp anys grand total to silver king coalition owns an estate of more than 2300 acres located in the most productive area of this great district its surface and underground machinery plants and other equipment are ranked as among the finest in the world both steam and electric power are employed its main shaft is 1300 feet in depth and its underground workings are estimated at miles yet it owns an immense area of virgin dividend disbursements were in 1916 and in 1915 judge mining smelting smelling Sm elting is entering the new year with rosy prospects for a long period of prosperity ahead silver king coalition the heaviest producer of the park city district and the second largest dividend payer of the state is the silver king coalition mines company under the general management of ex senator thomas kearns of salt lake this company within the last year wrested the title of premier dividend payer of the camp from the famous old ontario which had held the title practically ever since the organization of the district the company led the mines of the camp in production during the year its tonnage of crude ore and concentrates reaching a total which is as yet practically untouched the company employs about men in mine and mill most of whom are men with families and permanent citizens of park city it has been said that this company is more like a great industrial concern than like a mining corporation and that its ore reserves and new territory are sufficient to guarantee dividends for many years to come its present and past success is due to thomas kearns general manager and vice president preside nt and david keith president and to the able mine management of james hurnes humes the ontario the property of the ontario silver mining company one of the best known old time producers of the entire west and around which much of the early prosperity of park city was built ran the judge a close race for second place in the matter of 0 f total shipments for the year its aggregate was approximately tons which was more than double that of the preceding year when tons were sent out the total shipped in 1915 when the present owners were just beginning to get operations under way was 2000 tons so it is 19 seen that a healthy increase in production is evident the company has made very little fuss about its operations and little is seen in the press regarding it but its shipments have come along regularly each week and the aggregate placed it near the top at the end of the year the present big tonnage is due largely to the development and un watering operations of 1916 when the property was reopened to the 1700 level after having been flooded for a number of years the famous old producer is responding in an encouraging way to the present intelligent development campaign and the prediction is not uncommon that it will again assume its former position as a big paying proposition it holds a dividend record of its last payment having been made in december 1902 the ontario is owned and operated by th the bamberger interests of salt lake ernest bamberger is general manager for the company and newton A dunyon is mine manager the keystone the work at the property of the keystone mining company which was commenced in 1916 was continued last year this ground adjoins several of the famous producers of the camp and is said to contain the same vein systems as its big neighbors it is looked upon as a property of great possibilities ties probably the most notable of the v veins e ins which cross this ground ground is the crescent fissure which has been highly productive in that section of the district the keystone is controlled and operated by the same interests which are now back of the ontario it is under the general management of H G mcmillan and the of N A dunyon the three kings operations during a large part of the year at the property of the throe three kings silver mines company was limited to sinking a below the tunnel at the th level of the main shaft an important find of high grade ore was made at a depth of feet in this early in the year A Y streak of galena was opened which showed values of 25 per cent lead 12 ounces silver and 6 gold and accompanying it was an eight inch gouge of a brown oxidized lime on the hanging wall an assay of the latter showed the presence of ounces gold to the ton giving the ore a value of better than 1700 the company made no effort to develop this showing but devoted its attention to sinking the in an ail effort to reach the contact between the limestone and the weber quartzite which has made many big deposits in the camp however before this could be accomplished financial difficulties were encountered and operations were suspended early in september A meeting of stockholders li the following month reorganized the corporation as the three kings consolidated mining company exchanging stock in the new concern share for share of the old this was done in order to make the stock assessable and provide funds for the further development of the ground william anderson was elected president of the new company and 1 I P heath secretary treas aurer W H elliott is general manager work was resumed late in the year at the property owing to the difficulties and tile the high expense of work in the it was decided to confine future operations to the main shaft where sinking is now under way considerable equipment including pumps power drills and compressor were installed during the year and good progress with the new work is reported the three kings property comprises acres in a highly promising location it is practically surrounded on three sides by holdings of the silver king coalition and silver king consolidated both big producers and dividend payers and engineers including those of the government geological survey report that it contains the same formations which have made the enormous ore deposits in those properties the silver king consolidated the silver king consolidated mining company held third place in dividend payments of the year and fourth place in ore shipments it paid three dividends of 15 cents per share each being the regular quarterly of 10 cents and an extra of 5 cents in each case and one of 10 cents the latter called for and the former each the company has paid a grand total of in dividends items of importance tance in the companas comp anys operations during the year included the opening of its new milling plant and the steady driving ahead of its deep transportation and drainage tunnel the mill went into commission early in the year and has given a good account of itself ever since it was enlarged in the fall to seventy five tons from its initial capacity of fifty tons a day the companas comp anys deep tunnel commenced in 1916 had reached a total length of practically a mile at the end of the year on its foot journey to get under the companas comp anys main workings rapid progress with this work is reported and many promising fissures have been cut already this property has become one of the standbys stand bys of the camp and its steady production is regarded now as something to be expected it maintained its usual heavy tonnage of high grade crude ores and concentrates cen throughout 1917 averaging better than 1000 tons a month and closing the year with an estimated total of about tons the company is under the general management of solon spiro of salt lake the california comstock of interest at this time is the rumor that the silver king consolidated has taken over the adjoining california comstock ground the latter company prosecuted a vigorous development campaign throughout 1917 and shipped a total of about 1900 tons of lead ore however the decline of lead prices produced unforeseen difficulties and when an offer of for the property was received a meeting of stockholders voted to sell rather than to levy the heavy assessment which would have been necessary otherwise this meeting was held december one payment of was made two days later and the other halt half of the purchase price is due on january the announcement has been made by the directors that the purchasers are financial interests of the east and the story is abroad locally that they are the same as are back of the silver king consolidated this has not been verified at the present time if it is true the deal has added valuable holdings to that companas comp anys big area and the extension of the deep tunnel will open the ground to good advantage the new quincy production from the property of the new quincy mining company which is being developed through the level of the adjoining daly west fell off from the figure for the prosperous year preceding however it is said that the shipment of approximately 1 tons of ore was practically enough to pay operating expenses and that the company is entering the new year with good prospects of soon opening new ore deposits mine superintendent P P harrington has accomplished a great deal of mine development during the year and the location and favorable formations of the mine put it in line for possible favorable developments at any time the daly west the daly west mining company was fifth in the list of shippers in the district sending out a total of more than tons of crude ore and concentrates operations in the companas comp anys mill were delayed until late in the spring owing to inability to secure an adequate water supply but since then the plant has given a good account of itself conditions in the mine are reported to be entirely satisfactory with the ore reserves holding up well this is another company which goes on its way with no publicity but which shows up with a good tonnage of ore each week it is also one of the important dividend payers of the district and has a record of no disbursements were made in the year just closed H a mcmillan is general manager for the company the daly the daly mining company operating under the general management of col E A wall of salt lake reentered entered re the dividend list of the state last april after an absence of exactly twenty years its last payment previous to that was made in march 1897 in the year just closed it paid three dividends of 10 cents per share each with an aggregate total of and already in 1918 has paid one of the same amount the daly is one of the important old time properties and its dividend record is approaching the three million mark it now being 2985 the company shipped a total of approximately tons in 1917 much of the ore being of an exceptionally high grade other shippers included in the list of companies and leasers leaders who were in the shipping list during the past year and who are not mentioned above were big four exploration 1613 tons charles moore 1410 tons Dro broadwater adwater tons Nail driver tons iowa copper tons utah ore sampling tons W E jones tons park city mining 72 tons revelator 62 tons western ore purchasing 57 tons brugner buck 40 tons and union lime stone 33 tons this list of shippers from the great silver district is of course not complete nor has full justice been done in this review to any of the companies whose operations are here summarized an extended article regarding each property would be required to cover its entire operations during the year it can be hoped and anticipated that continued prosperity is in store for park city during the year now commencing and further it is hoped that many more bonanzas will soon be added to those of which the camp is now justly proud |
