Show dividends of utah in 1917 prophesying is a dangerous pastime at the best and about the only safe course to pursue is that of the fortune teller that is to deal in generalities and avoid all definite statements A year ago it was freely predicted that the record of 1916 would never again be equaled by dividend payers that the total of for that year would stand as tile the high mark for all time to come someone once rose to remark that the prophet is without honor in his own country in the intermountain west the year 1917 opened with the mining industry on the high tide of prosperity and it continued so until late fall when advanced cost of labor and supplies governmental control of copper the sickening drop in lead prices the threat against silver and above all the vague wording and indefinite meaning of the new excess profits tax law all combined to make the entire mining structure uncomfortably fort ably shaky however tile the year closed with the props knocked from under the proud dividend record of 1916 and with new high figures for 1917 in its place the disbursements bur of only two mines both located in the great bingham district were sufficient to accomplish this without viti lout the able aid of lesser lights of that and other sections in fact tile the increase of by the utah copper over its figures for the preceding year was the main factor in raising the record by almost exactly the total disbursements of velvet money during the year just closed so far as it is possible to secure the figures was the records show as stated above that they amounted to in 1916 in 1915 was paid in 1914 and in 1913 tile the grand total paid by utah mines to date is the latter includes payments by the bingham mines silver king coalition and daly mining companies which
