Show the pittsburg pl consolidated the property of the pittsburg consolidated M M company is located on the american fork side of the divide between little cottonwood and american fork canyons utah the divide at this point being locally known as pittsburg mountain the company owns several mining claims on the pittsburg fissure which Is one of the prominent fissures of this and the cottonwood districts considerable mining was lone done on this fissure in the early days and some very high grade ore was shipped this property has been operated at various times for the past twenty five or thirty years it is opened up by three tunnels driven northerly to tap the fissure the lower or no 3 tunnel cutting the fissure at a depth of about feet from tile the surface all three tunnels are in approximately feet from their respective portals and are connected by dinzes and raises from no 1 or the upper tunnel which cuts the fissure about twenty five feet from portal a large body of ore estimated about tons was extracted in the early days when the miller hill directly to tile the south was sending out its millions of products two decades before the tyng brothers of salt lake produced upwards of a million from the wyoming of the miller hill group frank I lines hines lately water commissioner of salt lake was superintendent of the pittsburg luring during the palmy lays days of production from whom S M levy later president and manager received many valuable suggestions and data under mr levys management the lower tunnels were driven and a large tonnage of ore developed A large body of lead zinc sulphide ore was encountered in no 2 tunnel which was blocked out for mining but owing to the high zinc contents could not at that time be shipped the mine has been closed down f for or several years and recently resumed op era quite an an extensive scale mr A H tarbet became the controlling factor in the company in 1906 and under his direction and management considerable development work was inaugurated the lower or no 3 tunnel was driven for a distance of about feet and the fissure was tapped feet below the surface at this time a was sunk on the fissure from no 2 or the middle tunnel some ninety odd feet to connect with no 3 this developed a large body of lead carbonate making off in the lime beds the work was suspended at this time due to the financial and industrial conditions tile the company started work last spring with a small crew of men considerable work was necessary to make tile the mine accessible by trail to the american fork road and establish a working camp at tile the mine at present the force consists of some sixteen men under tile the able direction of dan doyle foreman mr doyle is an old time miner in the cottonwoods Cotton woods and american fork districts and is thoroughly familiar with the conditions existing in those districts mr J denton benton leggat a mining 6 engineer of salt lake city made an extensive examination and report on oil this property last june for tile the company and in consequence of his favorable report and recommendations tile the company has outlined an extensive development campaign in no 1 tunnel a drift is being run east from an upraise forty feet in height following an twenty indies inches wide of high grade shipping ore trending toward a porphyry dyke which parallels tile the fissure on the surface for miles this no 1 tunnel will be continued along the fissure f assure to the north to intersect ore bearing planes known to exist no 2 tunnel starts in quartzite and the lime shale contact is cut about sixty five feet from tile the portal along this colita contact ef a lateral drift was driven about sev seventy enty feet where it intersects the pittsburg fissure and at this intersection a body of ore was exposed for forty five feet along the contact and crosscutting seventeen feet showing twelve feet of solid lead zinc sulphides sulp hides assaying 25 per cent lead 34 per cent zinc 5 ounces silver 40 cents gold 26 per cent sulphur 5 per cent iron and 6 per cent silica this body of ore is being blocked out for shipment as soon as certain connections are made with no 3 tunnel A drift is now being run easterly on this contact to intersect the porphyry dyke which promises some sensational sat ional development no 3 tunnel is run through quartzite cutting the lime shale contact at about feet this contact shows vein material and will be developed at present the tunnel is being driven ahead to cut the fissure at a point below the from no 2 tunnel where a connection will be made and the on the intermediate level off from this will be mined through the lower tunnel when this connection is made which will insure splendid ventilation a drift will be run south along the fissure to the lime shale contact where without doubt the body of lead zinc sulphide ore will be found with these bodies of commercial com percial ore already developed and the probability of other ore soon being brought in the company has decided to drive a tunnel from a claim it owns on the little cottonwood side of the mountain this tunnel will tap the pittsburg fissure about feet lower than no 3 tunnel and will insure favorable means of transportation as well as tapping the fissure contacts and bedding planes at considerable sid erable more depth A good wagon road has been built from alta alfa to this tunnel site and a force of men is now building bunk and cook house blacksmith shop and other necessary buildings to insure continuous work during the winter months the transportation tunnel will be started as soon as buildings are completed it will be about 1200 feet long this tunnel will also drain the mine of any water as well as insure additional safety for the men the pittsburg company is capitalized for shares of a par value of 1 each of which shares are in the treasury the stock is held in strong financial hands and the company will be well financed for present and future operations mr J benton leggatt has been retained as consulting engineer and assistant manager at a recent meeting of the stockholders a new board of directors was elected as follows A H tarbet president and manager H H green vice president J G doolittle secretary and treasurer bismark snyder and P S deoch |
