Show annual first aid and mine rescue contest of utah fuel company BY C H GIBBS at castle gate on august of this year was held the annual first aid and mine rescue contest of utah fuel company a contest of unusual interest to all mining men whether engaged in or coal mining on account of the thorough training shown by contestants in aiding anen en injured in underground accidents and rescuing them in case of their being cut off by fire or from other causes geologist ut utah ali fuel co afe the contest is in the nature of an annual outing which is taken part in by all of the utah camps of the company special trains were run from clear creek winter quarters and sunnyside Sunny side to castle gate about abbout fifteen hundred people came calne from these camps to join in the festivities lending their moral as well as vocal support to their home teams the mine bands from sunny sunnyside side clear creek and castle gate were in attendance and displayed ni much lucli riv alry airy in furnishing entertainment for the crowd between good music close quick first aid and mine aline rescue work baseball game dancing etc there was something doing all the time visitors were a unit in A 4 no A A PW VIN tipple at the castle gate mine utah fuel company with delivery at both ends voicing their unqualified approval of the in et and in thanking the castle gate welfare association for the royal manner in which they had been entertained the meet was held at castle gate on account of its central and favorable location for handling the crowd the superior facilities are largely due to the fact that ca castle astle gates mines are the largest fuel mines manes of the company primarily due to the superior quality of castle gate coal the contests were of unusual interest in that in addition to the regular prizes offered the winning team gets a free trip to the panama pacific international exposition at san Yran francisco cisco the latter part of this month at the expense of the utah fuel company the prizes were as follows first prize possession of a handsome silver loving cup for one year to become ithe the permanent perin anent owner of same if won there years byear s in succession gold medal to each member of the team Is second prize silver medal to each member of the team in addition to winning the above first the winning team will compete for the interstate championship of the united states in first aid and mine aline R rescue escue wor work k to be held at san francisco this month to be assured of impartial judges in the contests parties not connected with the company were requested to and acted as i judges they were mr J C roberts mining engineer united states bureau of mines denver colorado mr air J E pettit state coal mine inspector and mr H PI sanderson representing the draeger oxygen helmet co all contests were worked out to comply cimpl y strictly with the rules which will govern the joint field meet at san francisco and with the exception of the problem in rescue work were selected from practice problems of alanes and american the bureau suggested d by can safety as association soc lation these problems were as follows ile mine ine team was second while winter quarters no 1 mine team was second in first aid work and all members of the team received silver medals as prizes the sunnyside Sunny side no 2 mine team is now gency are to be suitably rewarded by the utah fuel company of the company to it is a fixed policy have men who are trained 1 in n first aid work scattered throughout the mine and about the urfa plant work are high and show almost perfect training the scores in mine rescue work would have hav e been higher if the men had been allowed a proper amount of time in which to complete the work a time limit of twelve minutes on the event not permitting the men to handle all features as should have been done in a real accident however the contests very clearly demonstrated the great value of such work in furthering the safety first movement in protecting lives and property in a and nd about coal mines the utah F fuel uel company officials should feel highly gratified over the manner in which company employees have volunteered ered to take this training and th the e excellent results which are being obtained in case 0 of f accidents in the mine an instance of the extreme value of this work occurred on august in the utah fuel companas Comp anys sunnyside Sunny side mine nick chimaras Chi makas a greek miner when leaving the mine and traveling along an electric motor road contrary to company orders came in contact with a live trolley wire when found by other workmen he was lying on the ithe motor road badly burned about the face and head and apparently dead notification of his death was telephoned to the mine office who in turn notified the state coal mine inspects inspect bu by telegraph in the meantime john patterson S mcclure and M bialson Bj Bi arson men who were near by and highly trained in first aid work went to the aid of chimaras Chi makas after performing artificial respiration for twenty minutes chi makas revived little worse for the accident other than more or less serious burns if there had been no one available who understood der stood reviving a man from an electric shock it would have taken probably an hour to an hour and a half to have obtained a doctor in which time the man would unquestionably have been dead the men who performed the first aid work in this emer in this connection another feature has been added to the facilities for first aid work that is hospitals at various points ing safeguards tor for its men and the veryll hearty operation cooperation co to this end always egiy div en by the U S bureau of mines and the state coal mine inspector and his able staff sunnyside Sunny side wins in san francisco there was great rejoicing in salt lake i on the dinst when it was learned that the sunnyside Sunny side team of the utah fuel company j had had made the highest score in the national first aid and mine rescue competition held in san francisco on the thus winning the championship of the united states in a special to the salt lake tribune a detailed account of the contest and victory is given as follows utah has the champion mine rescue team of the united states the sunnyside Sunny side team of the utah fuel company finished first today in the third national joint field meet with a score of 96 out of a possible points the roslyn fuel company team of seattle was second 1071 ja al W Z t wi three men event first aid meet underground where patients can be taken and properly and comfortably comfor y cared carea for until ready to be removed from the mine it is expected in the near future to have these hospitals hospi atals so equipped that if necessary major operations can be performed underground with every facility of a first class hospital roberts of the U S bureau of mines J E pettit state coal mine inspector and H H sanderson of tile the draeger helmet company are to be highly complimented for the thorough and careful work done in judging the contests utah may well be proud of her coal mines not only for their up to date methods in mining but also for their low accident rates this is especially so as utah coal dust is reported by the T united states bureau of mines to be the masot inflammable in the united states the meet demonstrated the watchfulness of the utah fuel company in provid and the goldfield consolidated mines team of goldfield was third the utah boys also won first prize in the three man team first aid contest and sixth prize in the five man team first aid contest victory in the mine rescue c con on y test was conceded immediately after the contest closed this afternoon hours before the official announcement at festival ila ball tonight the days success is regarded as a great personal triumph for H H sanderson of ofa 1 salt lake trainer of the team as well as for the participants forty one teams containing the crack crac organizations of the country coming from as far away as west virginia and alaska A laska completed in th the 0 events which were thebie feature detwiler J J johnson and J W littlejohn members of the three man team each won cash prizes and the te team in won a stretcher and equipment and a silver medal each the members of the hiawatha team of the consolidated fuel company were awarded bronze medals for their excellent showings in the state competitions yesterday van vail H manning director of the united states bureau of mines awarded the prizes and was assisted by charles E van barneveld chief of the department of mines at the exposition and herbert al wilson of pittsburg and L R palmer formerly of salt lake the utah men have been busy preparing for and competing in the events which ended so satisfactorily today ever since they arrived here the sunnyside Sunny side and hiawatha teams will be guests of general superintendent J S thompson of the utah fuel company at a banquet to be given tomorrow evening at the old faithful inn and various other forms of |
